Happy Walpurgisnacht everybody! In honor of this witchiest of evenings, I'll show off a peek at a character with a fairly slim chance of actually appearing in Trigger Treat. Despite my attempts to cover everything under the Halloween umbrella, there's a lot of material I just never got around to making use of, and the old vintage greeting-cardsy 1910's sort of Halloween look is one that I rather s...

Phew, that was a lengthy one! This particular background took me a little over a week to resize and clean up, so I'm hoping the rest of the resizing work goes a lot smoother. The small palette was a result of my trying harder to restrict the amount of colors used in each graphical asset, which gave it a lot of tiny details and dithering I had to redraw. Anyway, here's the background to our shop me...

Here's a sneeky-peeky thing that hasn't even been programmed into the game yet! Trigger Treat draws its tone from a few arcade shooters, and Metal Slug is a classic example we couldn't ignore, so we thought it'd be fun to have vehicles for the player to hijack and turn the tide of battle with. The Frankenstein mech you see here is still a maybe, as drawing the sprites for these is a lot more time ...

As some of you already know, we recently made the decision to increase the resolution on Trigger Treat's display, which will require redrawing most of the menu and interface graphics. DingDong has been upscaling the title screen, while I'm covering the more complex images, exemplified here by our level select menu. We plan to wrap up by the end of April so we can jump back into building the levels...

Here's another update on the concept work for Trigger Treat! As you can see in this example, sometimes a character can pop out fully formed with almost no changes necessary, while others require an iteration or two to get right. I was so satisfied with my initial visualization of the mummy playable character that the two original sketches were used almost verbatim as poses for the concept dra...

One of the major things we're going to be taking on is upgrading the resolution that Trigger Treat runs at. When we had first started the game the screen size was being kept relatively small to give a close look at the characters and action, but over time we started to recognize that this also really limited gameplay and rooms had to be kept small and cramped. During the next month we're going to ...

Here's a peek at the process we used on two of the playable characters Ding Dong designed for Trigger Treat. In these cases, Ding Dong drew up some preliminary designs and handed them over to me to gussy up and translate into something more in line with my own artistic sensibilities. While Ding Dong's main discipline isn't drawing skill, he's got a pretty good sense of style, and his pixel art ske...
