Hey everyone,
Iâve been waiting to finally start our behind-the-scenes series for The Strategy Guide Chronicles, and what better way to begin than by sharing how it all started?
This project wasnât just an idea that appeared overnight. It was something that had been growing for yearsâa love for strategy guides, worldbuilding, and storytellingâbut it wasnât until I rediscovered an old childhood favorite that it all truly began.
⨠The Moment It All Clicked
A couple of years ago, I bought the Phantasy Star Online strategy guide again. I had originally owned it as a kid, but somewhere along the way, it got lost.
Seeing it againâflipping through the pages, getting lost in the maps, the artwork, the breakdown of enemy stats and loreâit all came rushing back.
There was something magical about those old strategy guides. They werenât just walkthroughsâthey were portals into the gameâs universe. They turned players into explorers, giving us the tools to understand, master, and truly experience a world beyond just the gameplay itself.
And I realized somethingâI missed that feeling.
đŽ From Nostalgia to Creation
That moment sent me down a rabbit hole. I started hunting for old strategy guides online, but I was surprised by how expensive theyâd become. Just like retro video games, strategy guides had become collectorâs itemsâmany of them costing as much or even more than they did decades ago.
Instead of buying them on eBay, I took a different approachâI started searching secondhand bookstores in my area. Luckily, my local shops price books anywhere from $0.25 to $4, making it the perfect treasure hunt. And since I live in a smaller community, the chances of finding old guides were actually pretty good.
It became a real-life adventure.
Every month, Iâd visit three different stores at least once or twice, hoping to stumble upon forgotten gems. And over time, my collection started to grow.
After a few months of collecting, I decided to start making videosâjust reading through the pages, admiring the art, and sharing my thoughts. These videos were originally posted on my other YouTube channel, but they didnât gain much traction.
The heart was there, but the audience just didnât quite line up with my passion for strategy guides. So after a while, the project stalled.
But then, something happened.
In September 2024, I got inspired by VTubers. I loved the idea of creating a persona that could present and explore the world of strategy guides in a way that went beyond my real-life self.
It hit meâif I wanted to create something truly unique, why not build a character around it? A character who wasnât just a presenter, but a living part of the worldâone that could blend my love for lore, games, and discovery into a fully immersive experience.
And thatâs when the pieces finally came together.
đ The Heart of the Project
At its core, The Strategy Guide Chronicles is an adventure wrapped in the aesthetic of a strategy guide.
Itâs a world where relics hold forgotten knowledge, where magic and lost technology intertwine, and where Kazuroâour protagonistâisnât just a hero, but a researcher, an explorer, a chronicler of lost wisdom.
This project is my way of bringing back the joy of discovery that strategy guides gave me as a kid. The sense that every worldâwhether in a game or in a storyâis full of history, full of secrets waiting to be uncovered.
