Akai MPC XSE // Top 3 Pros & Cons vs the other MPCs + outro download

Hi!

If you've been following the leaks, this should be no surprise - MPC X Special Edition is now out. I had been curious about MPC X for a while, so when Akai offered to send me the XSE, it was an excellent opportunity to check this form factor out and compare it to all the other MPCs.

I say "form factor" because all of Akai's MPCs essentially run the same MPC OS (except Force, which is a similar variant) - XSE and Key 61 have more RAM if you need space for sample-heavy projects, but other than that, the same project should work well on all MPCs.

So, it's all about hands-on controls and connectivity (and a more extensive content bundle) - which I explore and compare in depth in this video.

I used my "Sun Machine One" track from the Maschine-based show to explore how fast I could get an idea into MPC (the answer is very... though I miss scenes, the locks feature and flexibility of Massive) - I've attached a download of the little outro jam for those interested.

... and coming up next on the channel are a couple of weeks of silence because, if all goes well, I'm planning 3 (!!) product launch videos in the days before and of Superbooth, and I'll be heading out there as well of course. It's shaping up to be quite an exciting show!

All my best,

Ziv (making yet another vs-video on a youtube channel called "Loopop"...)

Great review, thanks Ziv! This massive machine does seem like the ultimate all in one and hands-on production hub many musicians would ever need. Of course folks are gonna have their own preferences in workflow and it's great that the market offers lots of competition. I've owned an MPC One for 2 years and it has been a constant source of inspiration with its fast hands-on workflow in a way my computer almost ceased to be even with Logic Pro, a nice controller and interface. The MPC's flexibility is amazing beyond the boom bap or house electronica the unit is normally marketed for. I make guitar, synth, vocals and noise heavy alternative music with wild meters or no meter or tempo at all. I gravitate to sampled Foley based percussion either played on the pads or programmed to a Circuit Rhythm and everything composed and recorded on the MPC. I feel like it's my old Fostex cassette multitrack where it's just me and a wildly capable recorder, instead mousing around my desktop. I really hope Akai keeps on developing this current lineup just like Elektron does for its decade old hardware. Sure, some people love shiny new things with lots of specs but just like past MPCs that helped produce so many amazing records this current gen of Akai units is more than powerful enough to inspire a million ideas like in my case.
