Osmose: 4 Pros, 4 cons and an in-depth look at programming its matrix + audio download

Hi!

As I mention in the video, and I know this sounds hyperbolic, in my opinion Osmose from Expressive E is the biggest leap forward in black-and-white keyboard design since the invention of the piano compared to the harpsichord.

And then Expressive E went even further and partnered up with Lippold Haken and Edmund Eagan to customize almost all their presets and include their fantastic EaganMatrix engine in the synth - one of the most powerful synth engines I've ever seen.

But it's not all pros - sticking to the black-and-white key form factor means a few compromises in dimensional control (though pressure-weighted portamento kind of makes up for that!) and the EaganMatrix is no walk in the park to program.

This video takes you through everything, as well as general tips for interfacing MPE controllers with MPE synths - all these tips will be including in the upcoming book update.

Attached to this post is raw uncompressed audio of over 12 minutes of me playing my favorite presets of this synth.

Osmose feels and plays fantastic - I highly recommend trying one out if you have a chance! Feel free to ask me anything below.

All my best,

Ziv (with synth power comes complexity, not responsibility - but I try to break it down on a channel called "Loopop"...)

Thanks for the kind words! I probably won't make a comparison video in light it Slim's price and other priorities, but happy to answer questions. They're really different things because of the interface, and because Osmose's Z and Y go in the same direction. So, both can be good controllers, it depends what and how you want to play

This was the most helpful resource I've had in determining whether I should pre-order the osmose or not. Thank you so much for putting together such a well constructed video. Is there any chance you're going to do a video comparing directly the Haken Continuum Slim and the Osmose? I'd be really curious to get your two cents on how the pros and cons of each lineup and why one would want one vs. the other. Also maybe you could easily answer one of my questions about this here and that is how would you rank using them as midi controllers? I get the sense the Osmose is a bit more user friendly in terms of getting it to be used as a midi controller for other stuff especially since you can basically just turn it into a regular keyboard but if you're looking to control eurorack the Continuum is the obvious choice.

Thanks! That's a good feature request for Expressive E but to my knowledge that's not possible (there as SO many parameters there you never know I may have missed it...). That said you can tweak the pitch bend sensitivity quite a bit, so that rounds back quickly or accepts only the most aggressive sideways motions

Great review, as usual. Regarding the accidental pitch bend when playing chords, is it possible to modulate the pitch bend amount using one of the foot pedals? That would give you control to reduce PB amount when playing chords and increase it in the melodic or lead sections.

Thanks for the kind words and for being here! Re Uli - I was a big supporter of him "bringing back" instruments from the past and making them affordable (like Pro-800), but I have to admit I'm quite turned off by him attacking reviewers and reporters (e.g. Peter Kirn), and copying products from existing active and innovative companies just to sell them a bit cheaper (e.g. KeyStep)

Regarding the (appropriate albeit hefty) price tag, I'll have to wait till Uli Behringer jumps on this train 😂 Joke aside: The Osmose seems to arrive by August '23 here in Germany, so I have plenty of time to make up my mind and save way more money (of which I already put some aside for said Uli's Pro-800; please be sure to review it when it's showing up!). We'll see ... and as always: great review, Ziv, thanks 🤝
