Motorized synth knobs: Gimmick or Gamechanger? NINA Review (+preset audio download)

Hi!

One of the things that frustrate me most in synths is that once you swap a preset (and even worse, a timbre),  knob positions no longer reflect actual parameter values.

There are a few solutions to this problem - LED rings, screens and various pickup modes, and now, Melbourne Instruments give 32 drone motors a shot!

The synth innovates in quite a few ways interface-wise, including a knob per function mod matrix and a PolyBrute style morph function.

Here's my review of NINA, and attached is a high-quality download of the preset audio. Patch multisamples will be hitting your inbox in a day or two.

All my best,

Ziv (not reviewing drones yet, but it's getting close on a youtube channel called "Loopop"...)

Thanks for the comment and your ongoing support!

Eye-catching unit but it's almost $2K more than the Iridium desktop down here with (as noted), a pretty minimal offering in comparison. Certainly reminds one of a BCR200 which was a great unit for recall on hardware. I'm not sure which category it fits into but it's labelled as a "boutique" offering (translation "expensive") and if that's so there's a heck of a lot better value in that slot IMHO. Anyway, great dive as always Ziv - love the book!

Thanks - and not a secret at all :) I use MOscilloscope and MAnalyzer by a company called Melda (and their stereoscope too) - they’re free with some limitations in the MFreeFXBundle. Occasionally I’ll use scopes by VCV

Nice review; interesting boutique instrument and control approach. Quick question, but what tools do you use to generate the very helpful graphic overlay waveform views? They're a unique feature of your productions, so I hope I'm not asking you to reveal any trade secrets... ;^)
