October 2020 Book update: New and improved!
Added 2020-10-31 13:28:38 +0000 UTCHi!
For those of you following last month's ordeal of moving from Mac Pages to Microsoft Word, during the transition, the book lost a clickable table of contents and some links stopped working.
I am happy to report that after spending quality time with Microsoft tech support, the problem wasn't that I turned to the dark side, but rather that I didn't go far enough. Seems like the Mac version of Word lacks some features that the Windows version has.
Oh, and since Apple passed Microsoft in market cap, I may have picked the "underdog".
Anyway, during the transition, slight font changes meant that not only does the book fit in (slightly) fewer pages, but also a 75% (!) reduction in file size without a noticeable impact on image quality I think (I silently updated the September version a couple of weeks ago too...)
If you see any issues with the document, obviously please don't hesitate to comment or send me a personal message.
OK, on to the main order of business, here's what's new. As usual - search for <NEW (OCT) to skip from update to update:
- Added: new chapter Mixing Part 2: Advanced Topics - as I mentioned last month, my goal is not to write a book about mixing, but rather to put together the essentials - maximum impact tips that work and help to put together a solid mix (and thanks to the countless nameless mixing engineers I consulted in putting this together...)
- Added three new CV tips: using a contact mic and envelope follower to create velocity-sensitive pads out of, well, anything; covering a new form of "FM" synthesis - Flesh Modulation… and how to play oscillators and filters that don’t respond well to v/oct signals
- Added three new noise prevention tips to the “eliminating ground noise and hum” chapter
- Added Pulsar 23 and Solar 50 to instrument-specific tips section, as well as new video downloads.
- Added checklist item to the audio interface buyer’s guide regarding thunderbolt cables
That's it for this month - thanks for your support and quite a lot more coming soon!
All my best,
Ziv / Loopop

Hadn't seen that interface, sounds like it would solve Ableton's clocking issue. Not thrilled at having a VST controlling the box then converting data twice, then to the thru box(es). Though from a price standpoint that is the cheaper option and it sounds like it. It also handles sysex which I have found is a whole thing with MIDI interfaces. For instance, when using Patch Base and an iRig MIDI2 you can crash the app sending sysex back and forth to a DX7. My mio2 does better with sysex but requires more cables than the iRig and isn't passive. At this point though, I might just try the USAMO too haha.
2020-11-26 14:13:19 +0000 UTCHope to do an episode about this so I've love to hear what you discover. Regarding ES- I've not tried it but have you seen USAMO? https://www.expert-sleepers.co.uk/usamo.html
2020-11-26 13:37:07 +0000 UTCNope haven't tried either. Going to test the ERM Midiclock+ and as an alternate a Disaster Area Designs DMC-3XL which is a midi interface geared towards pedals, but it has a dedicated clock that can be sent via 5 pin in/out. Might try Expert Sleepers clocker, but I don't need all those digital in/outs (at the moment any way) on the ES-8 or 9, unless they have a simpler module with clock that I am overlooking.
2020-11-26 13:31:02 +0000 UTCBy the way have you tried clocking solutions by ERM or Expert Sleepers? I'm thinking of taking a look at those soon
2020-11-26 10:13:36 +0000 UTCThanks and welcome!
