Dreadbox TYPHON review, tutorial and 9 patch ideas (plus semitone level mod cheatsheet download)

Hi!

Dreadbox and Sinevibes' TYPHON is little synth with much more in it than meets the eye.

On the one hand, it combines six knobs into one (oscillator 1 and 2 level, oscillator 1 and 2 shape, pulse width and oscillator fm depth), and on the other hand, it adds two knobs that no other synth has to my knowledge...  (VCA and filter envelope timing).

It has analog fm that is both wild and controllable at the same time, and a mod matrix that eclipses many others in more expensive synths. And it can store presets. And despite all that, it's sold at $380/350 euros.

As usual, even if you don't own it or plan on buying it, I've packed my video with plenty of patch ideas, which will hopefully help you get more out of your synth, send you FM'ing your oscillators or filter, and bit crushing your oscillators! (note... as per the S&H chapter in my book, you can use an analog sample and hold circuit as a bitcrusher/downsampler)

I've also attached to this post the "mod level to semitone translation cheat sheet" I mention in the video.

I hope you find this useful!

All my best,

Ziv

yeah there's a way to create aggregate devices on Windows but I was never able to pull it off (though I admit to not exploring it too much). Even on a mac it doesn't always work smoothly

After a little research, I apparently just need to move to a Mac :). Eventually, after some tinkering in Windows audio settings and changing my input device in Studio One to Windows Audio, I was able to make it work but it also meant that I couldn't record anything from the audio interface at the same time. I guess I'm back to running it through a DI box to my patch bay. I have a less than ideal cable setup and I pick up a lot of noise on an unbalanced cable, if you were wondering about the DI. Thanks for the earlier responses.

Losing power for 10 seconds is a bad thing for sure - but no, to my knowledge USB audio should just be discovered in your DAW - that's the way it has been working for me, at least on a mac. Windows may require drivers, not sure.

The first odd thing is that when I plug the Typhon into the USB on my PC, my Focusrite interface seemingly loses power for about 10 seconds and then comes back. In Studio One, the Typhon doesn't show up anywhere as an input/interface. I'm wondering if the two devices are fighting for some USB audio "port" and the Focusrite is winning. Sorry, I'm a bit green if it involves more than choosing an input from my Focusrite interface in an audio track so there may be some fundamental thing I just don't understand. I guess the question would be, is there anything special about USB audio and setting that up in a DAW?

Any opportunity to enhance the book is welcome! I've not tried this yet, but what is specifically the question? My assumption is that this appears as an audio interface, so you should be able to choose it in your DAW. Is this not the case? Or is that the solution :)

Not sure where would be most appropriate but this seemed as good as any. The new 4.0 firmware update adds audio over USB. I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out how to set that up. I know a number of other devices have this capability and I would love a blurb in the book or a video about how to set that up.
