Review and Tutorial: LAUNCHKEY MK3 // Comparing 25,37 vs 49,61 // Generative Arpeggiator explained

Hi!

The simple and yet elegant generative arpeggiator in the Launchkey Mini MK3 was one of my favorite features when I reviewed it.

Today, Novation updates their Launchkey range to MK3 and brings those features to the bigger brothers in the range, as well as a new 37-key member, in addition to the 25, 49 and 61 key versions.

A few useful chord modes were added, as well as a better (but still small) screen, and custom modes (programmable hardware templates).

There's still no sequencer in these keyboards, they only have one arpeggiator, and you can't see parameter names for the pots, faders or buttons without using them, so these Launchkeys aren't the best bank for your buck if you need a brain for a hardware setup, but if you're looking for a cost-effective keyboard to control Ableton Live, (and there's HUI support for other DAWs) with a fun arpeggiator thrown in, these are definitely worth a look!

All my best,

Ziv (promising not to upload any more videos about generative arpeggiators this week on "Loopop"...)

Comments

Sure: Sony A7iii, Sony A6400 and iPhone 11 Pro (wide shots only). For lenses I use primes, Zeiss 55 1.8, Sony 28 2, Sigma 16 1.4. Hope this helps and thanks for your ongoing support

I was wondering what camera do you use to capture all your vids?

Thanks! I think we'll be seeing more and more smart keyboards. The two top sequencing brains are KeyStep Pro and SL MK3 if you want keys, and Squarp's sequencer if you don't (or are OK with connecting an external keyboard to it). NDLR and T-1 are the generative leaders. The generative arp here is nice, but I'd not base my decision on that if you're not planning to use Ableton Live. Hope this helps and thanks for your ongoing support!

As always, incredibly comprehensive. Thank you! You're definitely my go-to for this stuff. I know there are so many variables it's hard to make specific recommendations, but for someone trying to live a DAW-less life with no plans to ever touch Ableton but who would like a controller in the 25/37-key range for working with boxes like Peak, Digitone, Deluge, etc does anything in this space have similar generative features? I realize DAW integration's all the rage and you can simply repurpose the buttons, it just seems if they weren't putting such emphasis on the Ableton integration their might be an opportunity to innovate a bit on the hardware control side of things. Keystep and Keystep Pro come to mind.
