TORSO T-1 - Generative sequencer review and tutorial

Hi!

"Traditional" Sequencers are increasingly starting to add generative features: a little probability or randomness added to the KeyStep Pro, Spice and Dice on the Microfreak, Mutate and Deviate on the Launchkey Mini MK3, conditional trigs on Elektron machines, and more.

TORSO's T-1, a Kickstarter campaign launching today, is a hardware sequencer designed from the ground up around generative ideas rather than having such tools added as a minor feature.

As a matter of fact, it doesn't even have a simple sequencer in it, and its arpeggiator practically forces you to use it in unconventional ways.

T-1 is a combination of a euclidean sequencer, scaler, harmonizer, arpeggiator and more, with most of its parameters controllable with a Turing machine style randomizer.

If you ever find yourself in front of a synth, drum machine or DAW looking for new ideas or to expand on existing ones, T-1 is a ton of fun and might help.

NOTE: This is a Kickstarter project with inherent risks - the product isn't complete and this is Torso's first product as a company. As usual, this review as all the others are not paid, so there's nothing new there - my only connection to the company is that they sent me a prototype a couple of weeks ago, and there's no upside for me if this campaign succeeds - other than to see this fun sequencer finished of course.

I've attached a download of the outro jam to this post. A couple of days ago I also posted a cover of the wild and amazing Nautilus by Anna Meredith on Facebook and Instagram using the T-1. I don't feel comfortable offering that as a download that's part of a paid platform, so here's a link to it:

Do check out Anna's very unique work!

All my best,

Ziv (always happy to promote music-making with LFOs, Turing machines and quantizers on youtube as "Loopop"...)

Yeah it’s a tough decision :/

Hmm...both this and the NDLR seem interesting as ways to get inspiration for a jam. Not sure which seems the better option for me though.

Sure, it’s called Synthesia

Hey, if I could ask, what's the software you're capturing to generate the MIDI overlay when the sequencer is playing? Doesn't looks like the DAWs I've seen
