Poly Hector Review - does it make modular dreams come true? + track download

Hi!

It's modular inception! There have been a few attempts at programable modules, and Hector (and Beebo) are on the review table today.

Hector absolutely nails ease of use, and having a bunch of ported Mutable Instruments modules, an Echoplex Digital Pro style looper, and convolution reverbs doesn't hurt.

One may say, if you're going to be patching on a screen, why not just do it on an iPad or computer? A good point of course.

The answer, I think, is just like Beebo was Poly Effects attempt at letting you build your dream pedal, Hector is their offering in the dream module territory.

But, as usual, with the pros, come the cons - if you really get into making your dream come true, you might hit a CPU and sluggishness wall rather quickly, so yes, it can make dreams come true, but currently only if you can express them in a handful of modules. Hopefully future firmware updates with make patching large modules snappier.

More info in the video, the patch I created in the video and the outro track are attached.

All my best and take care!

Yes, I do have a Poly Hector. I love it, and in some cases prefer using a stylus over my fingers - it's mostly an ergonomics thing. The stylus i use was basically an "under $10" thing on Amazon. I will be trying some more, but just thought i'd check, in case you had a recommendation. I have also tried some freebies i've got from hotels or something, but haven't found anything that's nearly as sensitive as yours looked on this video. Thanks for the response - Cheers!

Hi Jesse, first - thanks for your ongoing support - really awesome and much appreciated! Anyway, to the point (stylus pun...), it was a tradeshow giveaway if I remember correctly; my guess is you can buy these on amazon/aliexpress for under $10. That said, do you have Hector/Beebo yet? Personally I wouldn't use a stylus, just tap with my finger, it's perfectly fine IMHO. There are two reasons I used a stylus in this video, first, because it obscured less of the screen than my finger, and second, because fingers leave smudges which look horrible on video but don't matter much in real life when thousands of people aren't watching a lit reflective screen with a zoom lens :) Hope this helps!

Hey Ziv, I noticed you using a fairly sensitive stylus in this review. I have a stylus that requires a bit of pressure to activate the touch screen. Do you have a recommendation for a sensitive stylus?

If you go to modulargrid.net you can plan and price out any rack you like

really cool alternative to eurorack/etc. - whats a realistic retail price tag for a setup like the one in the video or a very similar one? Thanks. Didn't know that one at all.
