Hydrasynth review + busy week coming...

Hi!

Several weeks ago a few companies asked if I was interested in reviewing products they were going to release, and I said "yes" to instruments I thought were compelling.

Over time they updated me with their release dates, and it just so happens that they all thought it would be a good idea to launch this week.,,

So this is a first of a few videos this week, but don't worry, there's no way I can keep up this schedule... anyway, here's the first:

Hydrasynth is a synth from a new brand called ASM, which belongs to Medeli, a chinese instrument manufacturer that you may not be familiar with as they mainly (to my knowledge...) make keybeds and other gear for inclusion in instruments by other, more well known brands.

What piqued my interest was the fact that it has a keyboard with polyphonic aftertouch, a configurable ribbon and the sound demos they sent me were quite nice.

So, what are my thoughts after spending some time with it? I'm thoroughly impressed. The synth engine sounds mature, the user interface brings a new and smart way to control synths with a lot of parameters, and the polyphonic aftertouch and ribbon work well and in meaningful ways.

I'm told it will hit stores in November.

More to come soon....

I was hoping to have more oscillators, mutators, and LFO’s. Not sure if it works that way. I’ll probably email ASM and try to get a little clearer breakdown. I’m too new to this to know 100% what I want yet. I DO want a Subsequent 37, and you do have a point. I wanted a poly synth and an analogue synth to start. I’m making downtempo electronic music and thought the Hydrasynth brought a lot to the table. I kinda want the keyboard model, I guess I was trying to see if I could justify it to myself to have both. Thx for your reply!

Thanks Ben and thanks for joining! I'd like to think my video is a good resource - I know you saw it :) but obviously the more you watch from other creators I'm sure you'll learn more things. I've never tried linking two but personally I would buy a synth with a different character rather than link two... are you looking for this to be bi-timbral or looking for more voices?

Great review! I bought the desktop version as my first synth, I was wondering if there are any good resources to learn how to get the most out of it. The manual "reads like stereo instructions". Another thing I have had trouble figuring out is, what are the benefits of linking two hydra synths for 16 voices? How would I set that up? Thanks!
