Hi!
About a month ago Moog asked if I wanted to check out a Matriarch prototype – so as a service to the public, I said yes...
By the way, as usual, I never do paid reviews and often (as was the case here) pay quite a bit on import taxes – just wanted to get that out of the way, and thank you for your support that makes affording these things possible.
So how is Matriarch? Pretty darn nice. It’s not for everyone obviously - $2,000 can buy you a lot of synth these days, and yet still, Moog has filled Matriarch with both obvious and hidden gems – a stereo filter, stereo analog delay that sounds incredible, stereo VCAs, four oscillators with a few interesting paraphonic modes, and 90 patch points with which to mess everything up – this thing is “hackable” to the n’th degree, especially if you’re in to stereo exploration and cross modulation. I even came up with an odd cross mod of linear FM and oscillator sync that creates minor subharmonics – just don’t ask me why that happens...
So, yeah, it’s really cool – check out the video if you want to learn more. I’ve also attached the audio of the intro jam as an exclusive Patreon download if you’re interested. It's short, but I think pretty sweet.
Aside from that, I look at every new synth as a learning opportunity to bring back and share patch ideas and tricks. I plan to continue to expand on this in future videos as well – about a quarter of this video is a patch tips section and there are other ideas scattered throughout, most are relevant to other synths as well.
All of these will of course be collected and organized in this month’s book update.
All my best,
Ziv (mangling stereo on youtube as “Loopop”...)
