MPC Live II vs One; Speaker test; MPC 2.8 tutorial and review

Hi!

Akai sent over the MPC Live II for review - the main differences are that it has a built-in soundbar/speaker, CV/Gate outputs and more buttons, but as usual, there are a few more details - all of which are covered in the "vs" portion of my video.

The real news of the past week, however, is the 2.8 firmware update, which applies to the entire MPC range.

This update almost feels like it's "personal" - they seemed to go after almost all my "cons" and take them out... obviously, they're just listening to users, but it's certainly nice to have a company consistently add substantial value to hardware products, and also fix what's needed, not just "tick the box" on new features.

The CPU and RAM are the same though, so rather than make the old one obsolete, this is just a "Speaker bundle/CV Gate", though they are discontinuing the Live MK1, making the options either an MPC One, MPC Live II, or a used Live MK1. Of course, there's the higher-end MPCX, but that's quite a beast, not portable, and substantially more expensive.

It's also interesting to see what the future holds for Force in this context. Time will tell.

Anyway, if you're interested in what's new in MPC 2.8 and how LIVE II compares - this is the video for you.

All my best,

Ziv

I've never used the MPC X but I'm sure it can autosample just fine - the same software runs all of them. Regarding used - absolutely - just make sure you're getting a good one. You want to buy from the person that bought it an didn't use it ideally :) Thanks BTW for your ongoing support!

Hi, your video made me an MPC head ;) really! After some consideration I decided to go for the X, instead just passing the first step (one). I was especially fascinated by how you could turn a synth (sirin in this case) into a polyphonic plug in essentially. My question: are there any differences in this sampling process with MPC X vs MPC One. Is it ok to get a used machine too? Thank you so much!

Agreed! Thanks for your support BTW...

As a Force owner, I have some mixed feelings about the whole thing. Akai's lack of communication & dialog with their own user-base(especially with regard to the Force) has felt like somewhat of a slap in the face, on top of our extended wait for what many would consider to be some very basic features & fixes for a product such as the Force. That's all I'll say on the topic, but I do feel the need to pass along the recommendation not to put much value on any, "hinting" that's done by them. It's always been a rule of thumb to buy gear based on its current incarnation, rather than promises of what it will be; but I won't hide the fact that Akai has demonstrated the necessity for such a rule more thoroughly than any other company I've dealt with, personally.
