Infinity War! Plus Pedal vs Superego+

Hi!

I'm a big fan of the concept of freeze/infinite sustain pedals. They can create long tails for "unsustainable" instruments with a quick natural decay - like pianos or guitars, and add polyphonic pads to monophonic or limited polyphony instruments like synths.

By the way, the function of "freezing" incoming audio is sostenuto, not sustain, but both these pedals have sustain capabilities as well, using different layering techniques implemented in each pedal.

Capturing a short moment in time isn't as easy as it may seem. In this video, I compare the leading "infinite sustain" pedals on the market - Plus Pedal from Gamechanger Audio and Superego+ from EHX (I reviewed Superego+ a while back - here's a link to that review).

I run a variety of virtual instruments through both - using sample libraries from Native Instruments, Spitfire Audio, Ableton and Arturia.

I hope you find this video useful!

All my best,

Ziv (looping fleeting moments on youtube as "Loopop"...)

Indeed I can go on with reverbs and especially frozen ones for ages too...

They are frozen reverbs, so certainly not equivalent. However, they can quickly provide a handy drone for a half hour of dorian noodling !!! And for the price of a value meal. I like it chained with a looper, overdubbing a couple of measures with a 50% decay. A wee bit of Valhalla verb and off we go......... I really like the Plus though. I'd imagine the deepmind would enjoy it..... H

Ive used both Plus and Superego, almost exclusively on guitar. Having said that, i find the Plus far and away the better and more powerful option of the two. Plus lends itself so easily to the performance-centric approach. Sure, you can add expression pedals to Superego, but i find the piano key on Plus much more immediate. Superego+ has the effects built in, too, but with Plus, you're only an effects loop setup away from having the specially tailored sounds you want. Plus, imho, is a simple, but painfully insightful, work of genius.

Hey Harry - first - thanks for your ongoing support! to the point, I've not looked at all at software solutions (yet... it would be interesting). I've not tried Sonic State's freeze - have you? I was under the impression that it's frozen reverbs (e.g. suited better for end of chain), not standalone "freeze" without the reverb? I may be wrong....

Ziv, Sonic State also has a freeze effect for Ableton. It's pretty handy and costs less than $10.
