2020-11-18 09:44:29 +0000 UTCIn 1991 I was 15 in high school, in Drama Class, and a senior actor (still a good theatre actor in my hometown) did sections of Bogosian's Sex, Drugs, Rock-n-roll onstage. In '91 a kid could do monologues smoking a cigarette on stage provided they could justify the action via character to a cool teacher. Those times are gone. Anyway, that, and a version of the Zoo Story by that same precocious young actor, blew my mind. Sure, that one-man show may seem dated now, but the time demanded and rewarded that kind of pre-autistic, in-your-face-sincerity. Anyway, it warms an old heart to hear the ladies honor and appreciate what came before. The collective vocabulary of cultural import is moving in faster and faster cycles, creating cultural amnesia. It's good to see Bogosian's moment revisited in a contemporary context, even if for a heroic novelty.
