Another invisible update this week!

It's been a busy one this week, with more work done to get the site ready for the backend overhaul. In addition to that, I've also been dealing with the annoyance that is job hunting, freelance style; also known as trials.

If you want to do translation work and aren't part of some nepotism-based clique, then you have to do what most translators do: prove your worth. This is done in the form of unpaid trial translations. You never really know what you'll get when you undertake a trial. For one job, I had to translate an entire chapter of a manga. For another, it was a selection of pages from several different sources. The one I've been working on this week is for game related work. That comes with it's own unique issues: the dreaded character limit, for one. Dealing with unknown inserts, such as variable positions is another. You don't know what the text exactly is in those case, but have to allocate space for it.

Taking a trial, however, is always a risk. I have been told more than once over the past 20 years, that I've "failed" only to then see my work being used word for word. But that's part of the package unfortunately. There are some companies out there who simply use trials to get work done for free.

Still, I look forward to the day in the distant future when my work on Project Moonrune Saga is enough to put food on the table by itself. Oh, the things I want to do then! Think worksheets and other supplementary materials to further assist with learning Japanese. Things I don't have time for now.

Okay, I'll see you next time with a new Zero to Hero lesson. Have a good one!
