Non-Noobtown: Writing an ending.
Added 2024-03-22 16:06:10 +0000 UTCSometimes you realize that your lead up to the end is better than the actual ending you had planned, and despite efforts to jazz up the actual ending you keep looking back to a pervious point in the story and thinking to yourself... it should have ended there.
So in the dialysis book, my original outline was that the bridge fight was a nice lead up to moving and fighting in the system lord's tower, where I could do some more lore and worldbuilding before moving onto the final fight with Chort, the weaker but other named goblin who was going to be Max's main boss.
The problem was that in the System Lord's tower... Max is kind of useless, by design. He's not powerful enough to actually meaningfully impact the story, and it is his story. So I wanted to end at his apex point, which was the bridge.
So I have been reviewing the book, and have made some substantial edits to various chapters doing the following.
Racism: I reverted that to elven traditionalism. It essentially operates the same, but lets me use a slightly more nuanced approach to the topic because I wasn't spending quite enough time to really deal with racism as a core theme of this book.
Sylanada: She gets elevated from Lady Sylanada to 'Princess' Sylanada. She's the king's headstrong daughter. She's now presented as a more practical elf who views the die hard elven traditionalism as holding her people back. This gives me a lever to tug during several scenes where she can push back against her father's policies.
Rogen: He's now portrayed as slightly more locked into the crusade of defeating the system lord. He has good reasons, to his mind at least, but he's turned his crusade quixotic especially towards the final act where he had the choice of his kingdom or the system lord, and choses the system lord.
Domagal: Portrayed as more selfish, she has the power to improve the race, but instead is investing all of the ritual power in herself.
Wife: Max's wife left him. She did not divorce him. I'm going to post a few chapters to highlight that, but it is left vague until the final few chapters.
In other words, there have been a ton of minor edits to various chapters trying to make everything fit together properly so some of the facts about the story have changed slightly though the themes are the same.

I like the changes! It's a good story.

At this point, his influence on other people is more significant than his own ability to achieve things. The initial ending was him fighting in the System Lord's tower, and it was strange. If the series does well, I'd expect to see him do some more stuff later one where he's a stronger actor in events.
