The Bonfire is a heavy crossbow built around a compact, arcane furnace mounted at the end of its stock. When activated, the furnace ignites with a steady, contained blaze that engulfs the loaded bolt in shimmering flame, heating the metal shaft until it glows red-hot. Unlike an ordinary forge, this miniature furnace uses an arcane converter, a specialized mechanism designed for magical crafting, to channel condensed magical energy into raw flame. This process converts mundane heat into volatile elemental energy, infusing each bolt with both thermal and arcane intensity. The result is a projectile that burns hotter and strikes harder than mere fire alone.

The drawback of this design is that the intense heat softens the bolt before it is fired. Many bolts deform, fracture, or even disintegrate on impact, leaving little to recover after battle. Because of this, Bonfire crossbows are reserved for specific hunts and combat situations, particularly against creatures vulnerable to flame.

Arcane Furnace. You can use a bonus action to turn the furnace on or off. While active, it emits a steady, low flame that functions like a lantern, shedding bright light in a 15‑foot cone and dim light for an additional 15 feet. You can adjust the cone’s direction and intensity as a bonus action, narrowing it or widening it up to a 30‑foot bright light and 30‑foot dim light cone.

As a bonus action, you can ignite the furnace to full power. For the next 1 hour, the crossbow sheds bright light in a 30‑foot radius and dim light for an additional 30 feet. While in this state, each bolt fired from the crossbow is superheated, dealing an extra 1d6 fire damage on a hit. A heated bolt continues to glow faintly, shedding dim light in a 10-foot radius until the end of your next turn. Flammable objects hit by a heated bolt are set ablaze if they aren’t being worn or carried.

Once you ignite the furnace to full power, you can’t do so again until you finish a short or long rest.
