Hoarfrost Huntress

Weapon (any crossbow), uncommon (requires attunement)

This crossbow is carved from pale birch, its limbs made from the antlers of a Snow Deer or Storm Meah. The ends are typically fitted with one or two Salgynite crystals—also known as thousand-year ice—a rare lahanite crystal formed by extraplanar energy from the Elemental Plane of Water. These crystals resemble ice that never melts, constantly radiating a faint pulse of cold energy. The Salgynite imbues each bolt loosed from the weapon with frigid power, allowing it to freeze targets on impact and erupt in a burst of frost.

Weapons of this kind are often used by nomadic tribes dwelling across the Drizzle Plain, the Latani Mountains, and the Argos wilderness. Though traditionally crafted as bows, recent years have seen them increasingly fashioned into crossbows due to their ease of use in harsh climates, where thick furs and freezing winds make drawing a bowstring difficult. The sturdier mechanism of the crossbow also allows hunters to maintain steady aim even in blizzards or while riding across the icy plains, making it a favored weapon among modern tribes.

Attacks made with this weapon deal an additional 1d4 cold damage. On a hit, the target’s speed is reduced by 5 feet until the start of your next turn.

Icy Burst. The crossbow has 3 charges. Once per turn, when you hit a creature with this weapon, you can expend 1 charge to cause the arrow to burst into ice. The target takes an additional 1d6 cold damage and has disadvantage on the next attack roll or Dexterity saving throw it makes (whichever comes first) before the end of its next turn. In addition, the ground in a 10-foot radius centered on the target’s space becomes icy difficult terrain until the start of your next turn.

The crossbow regains 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn.
