October Patreon Update (Still Mostly Paused)

Not much has changed since my last update, although you're seeing some signs of life due to stuff happening in the background (like art). Basically, assume it'll be a bit before new chapters come.

I had an actual holiday for a few weeks and I'm massively refreshed. I should have done this earlier in the year, as it's helped a lot. Unfortunately, I also got sick when I came home, and that's meant I've spent much of the past week not doing much.

I'm still trying to work out how I'll do monthly updates, as I want to avoid giving out dates or a schedule that I'll miss and then people get angry at me over, even if people will badger me about stuff.

Right now, the only thing I know for certain I'm doing is finishing the Heretic Spellblade epilogue. That's constantly been put off every time I try to get around to it, but I want to post the second omnibus to match up with the anniversary of the series (end of November), so I expect to finish and post Part 2 very soon.

Otherwise, I'm currently doing prep work for what I'll write next. I reread the entire Neural Wraith series recently (first time I've read it for a while, as the last time I listened to it was last year, and the experience of reading was also different, as audio feels different). I might post some thoughts on my reread experience, but I've spent much of the week since getting home fleshing out the plot, mystery, and major scenes of Neural Wraith 4 (whereas before I only had the broader "this is who is killed and how it triggers the finale" part down, and I've decided against writing NW4 and NW5 together). I haven't ran into any major issues with it, unlike when I tried to work on DT4, so that's a good sign.

Immediately before I left, I also came up with a potential solution to some of the issues I bumped into with Stellarforged's pacing/feel (it will require me to rework stuff from chapter 3 onward IIRC, so that Ethan gets his ship sooner). I'm going to wait until I finish the Spellblade epilogue and decide how I proceed with NW and Stellarforged (I'll go with whatever series I feel the most interest in writing at that moment).

I guess the summary is that I'm back writing away, but without much pressure and no deadlines for the moment. Except that I really want to get the Spellblade epilogue done as soon as I can reasonably focus on it enough (especially as it's been long enough that I need to refresh myself on Spellblade to make sure I don't miss stuff or write characters wrong).

The epilogue will be Messenger content, but available to everyone in the second omnibus once it comes out.

Thanks for your continuing support, and I'll see you all again soon-ish.

Welcome back and great to hear that you got to enjoy some actual downtime to shut it all out. It is really important to get the chance to completely remove yourself from your work to recharge. Personally I think the question about monthly updates should be whether you think you are providing something you aren't making obvious through your chapters,... themselves. Something like the snippets about Neural Wraith are very interesting to see but don't post something monthly just because you set yourself that goal/deadline (looking at something like the weekly Tamryn Tamer Facebook "Nothing New"posts). Overall I'd expect that maybe quarterly or just "as it makes sense" is a better goal to set yourself to avoid exactly the pitfalls of timelines and "broken promises" you worry about. Or maybe concentrate on it being just be some general thoughts how far into the book you feel you are (kind of happened with mob sorcery as part of the chapters iirc - maybe a condensed version of that every so often) but even that feels more like a future trap to yourself. Anyway, glad the holiday worked out for you and I am looking forward to whatever series is up next as I have enjoyed all of them.
