The "riches to rags" story that the High Sparrow relates to Queen Margaery is loosely based on the life of the Italian Rennaisance Friar Girolama Savonarola who convinced the people of Florence to set fire to their luxurious clothing, mirrors and cosmetics, books, musical instruments, and priceless works of art in bonfires all across the city of Florence that historians, and most famously novelist Tom Wolfe, have named the "Bonfire of the Vanities." Eventually, Savonarola was excommunicated by Pope Alexander VI (born Rodrigo Borge who was no slouch himself when it came to extravagant "vanities") and was challenged by another Friar to a "trial by fire" to prove Savonarola deserved the condemnation of the Church, to which Svaonarola counter-challenged the Friar. When the day for the "trial" came the two Friars spent hours arguing over details like who would go first, would they each be "armed" with a crucifix until finally the whole ordeal was rained out🤣🤣. Similar to the High Sparrow having been "invited" by Queen Cersei, Savonarola had originally been invited to come "preach" in Florence by Lorenzo de Medici, who also came to regret it.🤣🤣
