That's really interesting. The story does such a great job with its characters, and we are super excited to see where her story goes.

Wow, that's super interesting! Her character is so fascinating, we can't wait to learn more, and we'll pay extra attention to the small passing conversations for those bits of information. Thanks for the info dump :D

Season 6!!! We are finally moving towards the endgame!!! 😃 One of the things that George RR Martin likes to explore in his books is the effect of prophesy on characters in fantasy stories. How trying to avoid a prophesy can sometimes lead characters to unintentionally fulfill it (see Cersei with Maggie the Frog's prophesy about her children dying, and a younger, more beautiful queen replacing her) or how misreading it, or misinterpreting it can lead the characters to make horrible mistakes in the name of the "greater good" (see Melisandre wrongly assuming that Stannis was the Prince who was Promised - loosely speaking, that prophesy predicts the coming of a hero destined to lead the armies of light in the great battle against the darkness during the Long Night - I am assuming you guys get what that last part refers to? ðŸĪ” lol). Melisandre has done evil things, but she is not necessarily evil. If you think about it, if you were entrusted this mission, and your ultimate goal/responsibility was to save the world, you would be willing to make any and all sacrifices to achieve it. Then, if you found out you made a terrible mistake, and chose the wrong person, you would be devastated and probably lose all confidence in yourself.

No spoilers, but the show has already told you quite a bit about Melisandre's past, usually in side comments she makes about herself, to different characters. And also, whenever a fellow Red Priest talks to folks, they tend to also mention little snippets about Melisandre, or at least acknowledge that "another has been sent to Westeros" to search for the Prince Who Was Promised, a messianic figure in the prophecies of R'hllor, the Lord of Light. When Thoros meets up with Melisandre, he greets her half-jokingly by saying, "Grandmother, I've missed you very much." The faith of the Lord of Light is based in 'far off Asshai', the veritable ends of the earth (a port city thousands of miles to the southeast of the city of Qarth, to place in your mind, and surrounded by 'the shadowlands' where only the inedible blade-sharp "ghost grass" grows). Thoros went to Asshai for his training as a young man, and given the prominence that every single other Red Priestess gives to Melissandre's name she is very, very powerful in the ranks of the Temple of R'hllor. (R'hllor is the actual name of the Lord of Light, but it is not mentioned in the tv series, just in the books, but it's easier than spelling out Lord of Light all the time). Thoros was given his assignment to convert King Robert Baratheon directly by the High Priest of R'hllor himself, meaning Thoros had been groomed for the assignment and was himself a special devotee in the Temple Ranks, and yet he knew Melissandre as not only a long-time acquaintance (despite her visible age/magic youth form) but he gives her the honorific of "Grandmother", so even though Thoros is in cohorts with the High Priest, he still gives honor to Melissandre. Melissandre was sold as a slave when she was so very young that she could barely remember anything before her slavery. She was eventually sold in service to the temple of Rh'llor, and it was there she was freed 'a long time ago' to serve the Lord of Light. There is more explanation of Melissandre to come, so I won't spoil anything. But I will advise you that her entire backstory is told through disconnected snippets of side conversations which are utterly unremarkable at the time they are told. Therefore, expect that her remaining mysteries will be likewise hidden in casual conversations both with her, and through others who know of her reputation through her Temple. (e.g. you can't help but miss them, but on re-watch they will practically jump out of the dialog at you.) As for her knowledge of the future -- every single person who has scryed in the flames has reported the exact same kind of information -- scattered visions of key moments in time, nothing more. No narrative to connect them, merely strong scenes with few details. The visions themselves have no order, no plot, and no explanation. But after scrying so often, Melissandre just like Thoros of Myr and Stannis himself, is only given snapshots, and she has had to try and craft her own interpretation of the scenes she has been shown. When she urged the Sacrifice of Royal Shireen, the boon that was being asked for was not victory over the Boltons. It was so that the weather would break, the snows would recede, the ice would melt, and the horses of Stannis's army would be able to ride out to war over Winterfell. Boon asked, sacrifice made, boon received. But Melissandre revealed that she had seen two key visions concerning Winterfell. She saw Stannis's army fighting in the snow against the forces of Winterfell, and she saw the banners of the Boltons cast down from the castle walls and burned. Melissandre assumed with all her own personal hubris that the Bolton Banners being cast down were a direct result of Stannis fighting to take Winterfell in the snow. Now, to some small credit, she is completely shaken in her own personal faith in herself, because she realizes finally that SHE was wrong. And that she had chosen to read into them, as she has with ALL of her scrying, a narrative which was never actually there to begin with. Melissandre's pride and hubris cost the Princess Shireen her life, Stannis his life, and Stannis's Wife her life. As well as the deaths of all of the remaining soldiers who dared stay after the sacrifice of a child. And she knows it was all her fault... for being wrong. She is definitely one of the more fascinating character arcs. And there's still three seasons left, friends!
