STRANGER THINGS Season 3 Episode 8 REACTION (Full)

On this rewatch, this season actually fell from my second favorite to my least favorite. I still enjoy it, and there's a lot I really love about it, but I feel like the plot and characters often take on an almost cartoonish over-the-top quality that isn't really present in the other seasons (or at least is much more toned down), which feels quite dissonant with the larger story and clashes with the established characters. The show always has some level of being over the top just by the nature of the concept, but this season leans a bit too far into the whimsical, even amidst very serious and traumatic plot. In the previous seasons, the characters all felt really grounded and the stakes were taken very seriously, but in this season a lot of that kind of falls apart in favor of humor or homage, which I think sort of cheapens the characters. For example, Dustin's line saying "they're gonna die" when Hopper was getting ready to try to infiltrate the Russian facility was delivered like a typical action movie joke, at the expense of his character who definitely should have cared more about the possibility of Hopper actually dying. Or the way they had Hopper straight-up killing people, but they just framed it the way action movies do, as flashy and fun badassery that has absolutely no effect on his conscience and we're not supposed to acknowledge that the people on the other end are actual human beings. I just feel like it takes a lot of weight away from the characters and makes them into sort of caricatures at times, instead of keeping them grounded and realistic.

You mention that the kids can actually sing and the fun thing is that a lot of the kids came from Broadway. Dusty Buns had been in Les Mis & Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Lucas was young Simba in The Lion King, Max was in Annie and The Audience and Suzie Poo was in Matilda & Fun Home. :) Gaten came back to Broadway to be in Sweeney Todd & Sadie was just nominated for a Tony Award for John Proctor is the Villain.

I have to say, take away the fact that they opened up Hoppers Storyline at the end again, THIS is in my opinion the best true Ending to the show yet. A bit sad maybe, but all the storylines have basically been finished and every character had growth and came out a different person. I think what this ending shows best is what Hopper wrote in his letter: Change! It shows the change that can happen in life, that you don't have control over: Growing up, growing apart, growing closer, ... Everybody can relate to that in some way. From a objective perspective I think there is no "best season" for this show. Every season has a different style, focus and with that different strengths and weaknesses. But for me personally, I have a soft-spot for this season because of the style they adopted for this season: 80s Blockbuster or what I would call the "Edgar Wright" style: Very character focused with a lot of fun in it's situations, dialogue, editing and storytelling, often includes fun and well done references to other movies/shows and itself as well as playing around with stereo-types (sometimes playing into them, sometimes subverting them). Here is a list of the seasons and their influences because I find it fascinating that they managed to pull of a show where every season has a different feeling: - Season 1: Mystery-Horror (with Spielbergian Wonder) - Season 2: Psychological Horror (and Government Conspiracy) - Season 3: Pop-Horror and 80s Blockbuster - Season 4: Gothic Horror and Psychological Thriller
