I wonder if this was (conscious or not) another attempt to be like Caesar, who was also very publicly and constantly having affairs. On that point, Caesar often used his affairs as a political tool - he made his rivals (and sometimes friends) into cuckolds. Is there any indication Napoleon also used his affairs in this way?
