I looked into this and based on what I found, it seems the SS uniforms were mostly inspired by an earlier German army unit: the Prussian 5th Hussars, aka the Von Ruesch Hussars, which fought in the wars of Frederick the Great (who Hitler greatly admired). They may have also helped inspire the Black Brunswickers' uniforms.
