Dispatch 35

Here is the thirty-fifth patrons-only Dispatch. Topics include: language and dialect in the French military, Bernadotte's "scientific maneuver," and the books I use for research.

Don't forget to leave any questions for the next dispatch below. And once again: thank you for your support!

Thanks so much for your thoughtful response. I believe my podcast and patreon platforms are associated on my phone because I cannot go before Episode 60. Do not think that is you problem! Keep up the great work.

Where is Josephine? She was beloved by the people and a tireless advocate for causes and individuals alike. Not to mention, half of one of the most tragic/true love stories we know. Doesn’t she merit half an episode?

John C Richards

You talked about Eyre Foote, his incredible name, and his eccentricities. Some of them are easy to find, but not the ones that occurred on the campaign. What did he actually do to be relieved of command? Also, is it true that he is a direct ancestor of US Secretary of Defense Colin Powell?

Marquis de Launay

I agree with your comments about scholars not recognizing some dialects as being French. I am a French Canadian living in the US, originally from Quebec, Canada. Some people from France have actually told me I don’t speak “real French “. This would be like British people saying Americans don’t speak real English.

I was touring a Spanish fort that stood during the Napoleonic era recently & it got me thinking: what was life like for people with disabilities in the era? What did people even consider a disability at the time? And what kind of social, physical, or even structural accommodations were made to accommodate the disabled? Surely in an era such as this when wars & diseases were all too common, and medicine's ability to deal with either was immensely limited, there would be adaptations to life with disabilities.

Hope it won't annoy you that I repeat the question: There’s a famous quote of Napoleon about China being a sleeping giant. What did Napoleon and his contemporaries knew about east Asia and specifically about the Chinese empire? Were there any interactions?
