Dispatch question: Could you talk a bit about the role of chaplains in Napoleonic era armies? Who were they, what did they do, and how and why did they do it?

Josh Wright

After the Spanish campaign is concluded in the main narrative, could we get an episode or two dedicated solely to Tallyrand? He has been mentioned quite a bit. But it would be nice to get something of a deep dive into his past in the Catholic clergy and his general background.

Angelo Stagnaro

Since Austria initiated the war against the army that had repeatedly humiliated them for the last decade, did the Hapsburgs troops feel that they picked a fight against a stronger opponent. Defensive wars easily rouse patriotic feelings to defend the homeland but that was not the case in 1808. That being said, was there a wide spread feeling that the Hapsburgs leadership made a foolish decision to start the War of the 5th Coalition among the regular troops? I’ve been looking forward to this part of the story and really enjoy what you’ve already covered. You’re doing a great job so thanks for the amazing content.

Question for the dispatch: Have you ever been to any Napoleonic sites in person? Like battlefields or palaces? Love the show, keep up the fantastic work!

Man, if I got my shoulder blown off by a cannonball I think I'd rather be taken to the front, loaded up with morphine and just shoot muskets at the enemy until they finished the job. Half a day of dying sounds like the worst way to go.

This isn't showing up in my podcast app. Looks like this post isn't categorized as a "podcast" in Patreon. So manye that's why it's not showing up as a podcast in the RSS feeds? When I press the "Podcast" button at the top of the "Recent Posts", this one isn't there.

Zach

I ended up listening in the Patreon app. I primarily use Podcast Addict on Android, but just as easily can use Patreon.

I've tried multiple RSS apps and it's not there so this is clearly a feed issue.

I’m having the same issue but the feed url looks the same

Hello, seeing the comments I guess this is not an extended problem but here’s what is happening to me: I got the email for this episode but it is not being shown in the list in my player app (Overcast). Could it be a problem with the RRS propagation or did the url change? Thanks!

The half-hour rant against Talleyrand sounds like something Ridley Scott's Napoleon would do.

Blake

Ah, that's a shame. Although I can't say I'm surprised, as I said in the episode, 2000 feet seemed a bit unbelievable!

The Age of Napoleon

Perhaps you will cover this in the main narrative in more detail. If not, would really like this answered. Feel free to rephrase this long winded question however you choose. How did the Austrians mount a formidable army that almost beat Napoleon at wagram? After losing Italy, the Holy Roman Empire how could they compete both with troop amount and financially? Even after British subsidies. Every napoleonic battle always mentions the amount of guns the winning side wins. I assume replacing these guns was expensive, which the Austrians would have to do. Was the loss of guns more an economic loss, or a field loss as it would take time to transport replacements to the front line. replacing casualties. If the French army was worn down from years of fighting, wouldn’t the Austrians be even more so? Given they were involved in most of these battles and on the losing end? How could there be any optimism among the rank and file or leadership in Austria. All of Austrias veteran troops would have only known humiliation after humiliation against their French counterparts.

Tom

Had no problems. Love Talleyrand - the great survivor

Diana J Austin

Same issue here.

Kyle Cassidy

Sorry but the extreme range of Plunket’s shot has been debunked and the consensus is now generally that it was 200m or less.

Rob Griffith

Yeah I've got the same problem, anyone figured out what's wrong?

Pon

Sorry about that! Unfortunately I don't think there's a way I can check on that from my end, you might have to try Patreon support if it still won't refresh

The Age of Napoleon

The RSS feed might be down. The free feed updated, but the Patreon feed hasn't, despite manually refreshing.
