I was shocked when I saw this in my feed, and terrified over how blind you seemed to come into this for. It's a rough one for everyone, but most don't have so direct a personal connection. I hope the patron recommendation came with at least a bit of a warning. Innocence being made to confront the challenges of reality is something that Ghibli (and Miyazaki) are famous for. And while I generally prefer the themes Miyazaki (via Ghibli) are known for (often over coming and shining through) bitter stories like this from Takahata also needed to be given a voice and the amazing artwork of Ghibli did it such justice. The awful Aunt is not entirely wrong, and in many ways relatable to a Japanese matriarch in how she tries to subtly guilt Seita into realizing 'on his own' that he needs to stop loafing around and start pulling for the team like the rest, particularly in a time of a national existential crisis -- "don't you have to go to school? what about the factory? why head for the shelter when you can volunteer for the fire brigade?" etc - Seita, the son of a Naval Officer can even come off as spoiled from the outside looking in with how comfortable he is sitting around doing nothing; The Aunt hasn't seen ume boshi in who knows how long and he just shows up like it's normal. The tragedy is in how Seita isn't lazy or apathetic about the war - he moves mountains for his sister when on his own, but absent more direct guidance never finds real footing. As you note, he's just a kid. We want to reach into the screen and help and it hurts so deeply that we can't, and the Aunt seemingly won't. And let's not forget the absent Uncle off screen the whole time. It's all just awful. Tragic and awful. We know how the story ends, and are powerless to do anything but watch and wait for the wheels to come off. All the beauty imaginable in the world in those two children, right to the end. How can we do better?

This is definitely one of the more heavier emotional movies of Studio Ghibli there is. In your own time, I would recommend watching the behind the scenes of Grave of the Fireflies to get a little more insight to this movie's creation, it's definitely worth watching, not necessarily for react content itself though. The next Ghibli movie recommends would have to be My Neighbor Totoro and Pom Poko.
