Leaders + Character Tactics in Warhammer 40K

I think that he is better with assault intercessors, cos of w rerolls.

Attacking wound 1 units with the melee of the bodyguard first before the leader is so obvious but something I didn’t give thought to.

Thane the Toxic

the fact ragnar gets the str and atk from the blood claws ability is exactly why I moved ragnar from leading a bladeguard squad to leading blood claws. Plus lets you use a rhino with them

Callum

Yes, but no. Dev wounds occur after all other damage because the entry for dev wounds explicitly says it does. See the entry for "Devastating Wounds" under the "Weapon Abilities" section of the core rules.

I play 3 armies but my main is space wolves. I use Ragnar Blackmane with a squad of blood claws and a 6 man squad of bladeguard with a lieutenant. Thats it so far. I also have Logan Grimnar on Stormrider but no TWC. Ive got another lieutenant that i could put with a squad of blood claws or assault innersesors. But knowing that the unit rule effects everything helps more than you think. I didnt know that i can have the blood claws charge with ragnar and have everything get the +1 to strength and attacks until now. Ill have to pay close attention to that.

Is it also a thing where dev wounds only occur after ALL of the shooting because of how that works as well? You make all of yoir attack and wound roll "at the same time" so any devs are applied after the whole unit it done with its attacks?

Awesome Ash, thanks very much. As ever I'm sure it's in the codex somewhere but your response made it clear, cheers!

Patrick, I am not Auspex, but I believe I know the answer to your query. The sequencing for shooting goes 1. Select an eligible unit (select your unit to shoot if it still can) 2. Select Targets (decide what weapon profiles each model is using, what units each model in YOUR units is targeting with those weapon profiles) 3. Make Ranged Attacks (Hit roll, wound roll, allocate attack, saving throws, inflict damage, in that order) Two things in this sequence. First, you have declare all of your units attacks during the select target step, so you have to choose who is shooting what before you roll and dice. And second, the defending player allocates all attacks that hit and wound to the unit before they start making saves. Only then does the defending player start making save rolls. Since the Characters are still part of the unit at this point, they are included in the unit for purposes of allocating attacks, rolling saves, and taking damage. The sequencing is set like this purposefully to ensure that attached units can still take damage from all of the attacks going into the unit they are attacked to. So in your example, the second weapon profile should have bee rolled to hit and then rolled to wound before any models had taken any damage. Marneus, Vitrix and the lieutenant has three bladeguard with them during select targets, so they might still suffer the sting of whatever the second weapon profile is. tldr: Treat attached units as part of their bodyguard unit until all of the attacks from the unit that killed the bodyguards are finished.

Great video, thanks Auspex! Question about the timing on splitting once the bodyguard is destroyed. Using the specific example of Marneus+Vitrix AND a lieutenant attached to 3 blade guard. Entering shooting and an enemy unit puts both weapon profiles into the squad. The first one wipes the bodyguard, when do the leaders now become their own unit? The second weapon profile still needs to be assigned to models so which models take the wounds and which Toughness/Save is used. Sorry for the long question!
