The Phistomefel Puzzle Hunt
Added 2022-12-21 18:33:58 +0000 UTCWe are absolutely thrilled that our friend Phistomefel volunteered to make a Puzzle Hunt for Cracking the Cryptic's Patreons! This demonstrates the value of being a member of this very special club, and as our Christmas Present to you, we are delighted to present his Hybrid Sudoku Hunt here.
Examples, puzzles and instructions are all in the document, and we wish you some very happy holidays as you struggle with the puzzles. All we can promise to you is that the great man has not let himself down in any way at all - the puzzles are excellent, and the revelations just keep on coming!
We are setting a deadline of January 10th (4pm UK time) for solutions - the prize here is to get your name read out on the channel if you get through the whole hunt and deliver us the exact solution phrase.
Many, many thanks to Phistomefel - and many thanks to YOU, our wonderful Patreons, for supporting the channel so generously and so consistently through all these wondrous time for Sudoku.
Merry Christmas!
Simon & Mark

In Nori Nori can dominoes overlap? Because I'm at an impasse where either way I place some shaded cells they are gonna create an overlap at a 90 degree angle to be specific.
2023-05-16 16:21:57 +0000 UTCLate to the party here, but in the "raging river" puzzle, what does ? * really mean? If the question mark can be zero, why would it not just be a star and nothing more?
2023-01-13 10:28:35 +0000 UTCExcellent puzzles, thank you Phistomefel. Elegant logic throughout as one would expect. Until the last puzzle I would also have said that they were not horrendously difficult, but the last one really nullified most of my neurons and I had to find a hint, which I don't like doing.

2023-01-02 14:54:57 +0000 UTCThey may not repeat, this was clarified in the follow up Patreon post
2022-12-28 21:23:04 +0000 UTCDid you get an answer to this? I am just starting and wondering the same thing.
2022-12-28 15:57:56 +0000 UTCFor Nori Nori, may the digits in the cage repeat? It doesn’t explicitly say that in the rules
2022-12-24 23:25:06 +0000 UTCAfter 2,5 hours and shading all but three cages I broke the puzzle and have no idea how far I have to go back to fix it. I am afraid I have to start all over. But that will have to wait until after christmas.

2022-12-24 00:43:53 +0000 UTCAlexander: orthogonally connected. Both me and Brett found unintended example solutions, so just go straight for the main puzzle
2022-12-23 21:31:41 +0000 UTCWhen it says the ocean has to be connected, does this mean orthogonally or is diagonally sufficient? Also, how do you solve the example? I also found a solution that wasn´t the intended one.

2022-12-23 19:05:35 +0000 UTCI would say once you get the break in, the puzzle really starts to hum. After shading most of the top 3 rows and making a couple deductions I shaded in like half the puzzle in a minute because the logic flows really super nicely

2022-12-23 12:03:01 +0000 UTCThe nori nori really got under my skin! Have lots of work deadlines, but I keep coming back to the puzzles in any break I have 🙈

2022-12-23 11:02:00 +0000 UTCThese are quite difficult what a fun hunt. I loved the nori nori

2022-12-23 09:23:54 +0000 UTCThanks! The main puzzle worked out well. A bit unfortunate to have example puzzles that are harder (impossible) to solve than the main ones. It would also be easy to add a few hints to the example to make it unique. Still a great puzzle pack though :)
2022-12-22 12:18:21 +0000 UTCGiven that I've found a duplicate solution to the example puzzle in Nori if I don't assume standard cage rules I will assume standard cage rules apply
Brian Scott
2022-12-22 02:58:24 +0000 UTCI have received confirmation that the first sentence of the rules should indeed state "Normal KILLER sudoku rules apply."
Philipp Blume
2022-12-22 02:50:20 +0000 UTCI also came for clarification if normal cage rules apply to the nori nighthawk puzzle
Brian Scott
2022-12-22 02:44:02 +0000 UTCI noticed that with the example puzzle as well, but in the main puzzle the given rules appear to be sufficient.
2022-12-22 02:17:09 +0000 UTCIs there a requirement that the island in the archipelago puzzle do not contain 2*2 island squares? It only says that there are no 2*2 _shaded_ regions. Image of solved _example_ puzzle (= no spoilers) with 2*2 island squares https://imgur.com/a/hos2aSy (or is there another rule I've missed?)
2022-12-22 00:08:04 +0000 UTCThey are in increasing order of difficulty, more or less. I've been through the first 5 and they definitely exhibit a gentle uptick in fiendishness!
Philipp Blume
2022-12-21 22:56:00 +0000 UTCFor Nori Nori Nighthawk it does not explicitly say that cages may not contain repeats. May cages contain repeated digits in Nori Nori Nighthawk? Also a tiny mishap causes the puzzle "The Raging Stream" to be titled "The Raging Storm" in the CtC app. I hope these minor issues do not inhibit anyone's enjoyment. I for one am loving the puzzles so far!
Philipp Blume
2022-12-21 22:08:39 +0000 UTCThanks, excited to get started! Any suggestions on difficulty levels for these puzzles? Or should we assume they're just all very hard, given all the long Phistomefel video's we saw on the channel?

2022-12-21 20:21:28 +0000 UTCSo looking forward to this, though my sleep time will probably suffer!
Kim Geiger
2022-12-21 20:18:38 +0000 UTCWonderful! However, after competing the first puzzle I only get a story fragment, not a solution word as the instructions state I should - am I missing something?
