For my third(!) post on this one, I just came back to this on a re-listen and have a couple closing thoughts. 1) The Arya "twist" wasn't narrative; it was a game of Clue. "You thought it was Jon with Longclaw or Dany with Drogon, but it was really Arya with Littlefinger's dagger! Hah!" I think people are going to look back on this era of television and judge that it was a huge mistake to try to write your show with the goal of surprising Reddit. A lot of shows of this era either skipped foreshadowing or introduced stupid twists specifically because the Internet had figured out their story, and it was always a mistake. 2) I said this back in the day, but if they weren't giving Jon anything else to do, they could at least have had him kill the wight dragon. It would have been awesome, it would have advanced his arc, and it would set up the rest of his story nicely.

2019-04-30 18:42:13 +0000 UTCYeah, it makes you appreciate GRRM even more - he put more thought into the tactics of battles that didn't even happen (like Baratheon battle at Storm's End) than the show writers put into their signature setpiece. OTOH, as fun as it would be to imagine an alternate universe where the show hired Bernard Cornwell or Steven Attewell as their battle tactics consultant, it's been clear since at least the Battle of the Bastards that they're not going to do that.

2019-04-30 16:18:03 +0000 UTCRegarding Jorah's arc, I confess I can't remember what's in the show vs the books, but I liked it in this episode. My take was that he was a slaver, a creep, and an above average sword who tried to recapture his youth by grooming Dany. Then after he was broken down, he gave up on that and went out a faithful knight. Like Theon he gave up on his selfish goals and ambitions, and fell back on his childhood values, becoming at the last a hero.

2019-04-30 16:09:10 +0000 UTCMy prediction is that we will get a buildup to the kings landing battle episode, a battle episode, and then an episode with Linus and Charlie Brown on the brick wall talking about it. Roll credits.

2019-04-30 14:40:15 +0000 UTCThe key difference between “The Long Night” and the “Blackwater” episodes is that GRRM, the Maestro, wrote the “Blackwater” episode. I enjoyed the dance of the dragons fight, Arya’s and Theon’s scenes. Really hoping the day after episode 6 airs, the firm release date of TWOW is announced. A girl can dream...
