Thrones Review: GoT S08E02: "A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS" Questions!

Holy shit, guys. What an episode. Emmett and I are getting ready to record our episode review/analysis tonight. Send your questions! We'll pick the best of them!

Comments

Will there be a Melis ex machina moment next episode? An arrival of flame wielding Rhllor sorcerers and sorceresses would be helpful against the army of the dead. I can’t imagine that Melisandre wouldn’t be around for the moment she’s been prophesying about since season 2... even if there isn’t a Gandalf moment at WF what do you think Mel’s role will be in season 8?

Lord William

Is the new shireen really mel glmaoured?

Ser Fif Whoresbane

I know!! Where the heck are the Reed’s?!

Bword

Tell us why Brienne’s knighting was one of the best scenes done in the show ever. And why anyone who can’t see this is wrong wrong wrong. Also, so many book shout outs! Talk about those, pretty please.

Bword

Are we going to go the rest of the (TV) series without: The Blackfish, Sweet Robin, Edmure, The Reeds? And would you guys be okay with that? George specifically emphasizes the need for scouts and reconnaissance prior to battle. Robb and Jon must’ve had relatively similar martial trainings, how can the NK army “sneak up” on them? Thanks guys!!

Jose Yumet

Did Arya seek out to fuck the Hound but go for option 2 when Beric showed up?

Master of Zorse

Did Pod get his money back from the sex workers because of his amazing voice?

Master of Zorse

They reminded us how clever Tyrion is, them have him sit with Bran to hear his story. What clever move do you foresee Tyrion making to help our heroes defeat the NK?

Traci Laird

Knowing there are still three episodes after the Battle of Winterfell, what do you think about the Night King splitting his army (like Robb in the Whispering Wood)? They could have a portion of the army fighting in Winterfell and send another force directly for King's Landing. Once our Northern heroes realize what is happening, they race after them, meeting in the Riverlands. At the Trident maybe? We'll have The AotD, the Northern forces, and Cersei and the Golden Company coming together at the Trident, fulfilling Dany's vision of herself armored in black. Or do Bran's visions negate this as a possibility? Book implications?

Ashley Borhart

A lot of people think that Arya will die possibly as soon as the next episode. Do you think that is true and will it have any parallels to Syrio Forrel’s death?

BW

Hey guys, longtime listener, first time commenter. Just wondering what you think about this tin foil idea: Bran's "trap" to lure the Night King into the Godswood has something to do with "unmaking" him. Whether this is erasing him via weirnet, or somehow removing the obsidian from his heart I don't know. During season 6 it was hinted that Bran may possess the ability to change the past. As much as I detest "bran goes into the past and does X" theories, I wonder if this may be something the show pursues. Just a thought. Anyways, thanks for reading!

Princess Leah

Will the WW really be defeated this early on? I keep hearing that the rest of the season will be battling Cersei but that seems so ugly and wrong.

Dalyce

Are they setting Dany up as the final villain against everybody that's left? She seems to go 100% for "throne is mine" and not giving any credibility to Jon's claim or northern independence, while the north is backed by 3-4 kingdoms and all remaining wildlings. Not a single person seems to like her anymore

Henning Neumann

How much of the next episode will echo Summerhall given Brienne's new knighthood and Jenny's Song?

Dalyce

WHY is Jon putting his women and children down with a bunch of armed dead guys knowing full well that the NK's main schpeal is necromancy? Seems like too much of a plot hole for me

Dalyce

What are the odds that the Night King doesn’t even show up to the Battle of Winterfell and zooms off to King’s Landing while the Golden Company is marching North? I feel like that would be a moment of devastation for the living that it would make for great tension for them to realize that they had to hunt down each White Walker instead of targeting him. Additionally: we haven’t seen the dragon shadow over King’s Landing yet from Bran’s vision. I just don’t see them escaping if the Viserion survives. And I don’t see them winning either. So in my mind, the Night King pulls an audible and scaddadles to KL to torch the Red Keep while it’s defenseless (enter Dany’s vision).

Azor Ahai Five

That's good to know

Lady Dayne the Twighlight Star

Could be in the form of skeletons... The ones that killed Jojen didn't seem to have a ton of connective tissue left iirc

Zack Newman

They left it up to Maisie, how much she wanted to show or not show

Zack Newman

What an episode, that was definitely my favorite in many years. The "no chance, no choice" vibes of the whole thing as our group of heroes gather for one more night in each other's company before facing their impending doom is what makes this story so special, and what will make future episodes so painful. I loved it. Anyway, question time - do we think "Jenny's Song" is the song that Rhaegar sang at Harrenhal that made the wolf maid cry? It definitely made the rest of us cry.

Will Marszalek

Do you think the children if the forest will swoop in and save the day? Where is Sweetrobin? Can fire kill the Night King?

Alleras Sand

Would also LOVE to hear Jeff's thoughts & analysis of the military strategy vs the Others!

Zack Newman

Hey fellas. What an episode huh ?!? Upon rewatching I couldn’t help but notice ( not sure if this is intentional) but Brienne standing and vouching for Jaime reminds me of Ser Dunkin the Tall needing someone to confirm his Knighthood in “The Hedge Knight”. Again, not sure if it was a conscious decision but the irony of Dunks descendant (whom I guess could have been considered a hedge knight in some fashion) having to vouch for a former Lord Commander of the Kings Guard is very satisfying. On even more than just a romantic level, Brienne and Jaime have pushed each other into being the person they truly want to be.

Sir Way of Course

Hi guys. This week's episode was terrific. Probably the best since GOT's earlier seasons. Just curious to know what you guys thought was the weakest part of the episode and why. Love you guys' podcast and keep up the good work.

Aslan Christbeard

Hi guys, would love to know what you made of Bran revealing the Night King's endgame, viz., to kill the 3ER to erase all the world's memories?

Ajith Suresh

Hi guys. First up I LOVED this episode. I didn’t do a rewatch so going to be biased, but my favourite episode ever I think. Just wondered where you thought we were heading next? And how you thought we’re going to get there. I think it pretty likely that Winterfell is going to ‘fall to winter’ but where are they going to next? Is the NK just going to stop to put his banners up and make some more art while they get away?? Are they going to the iron islands/vale/neck or just straight to KL knowing there are 20k men there that could help, but probably won’t? I’m at a loss as to how any of it works out and I’m starting to feel true anxiety about how perfectly Cogman has swelled my heart to make its shattering next week all the more painful. Please give me some hope ❤️

Fiona Piper

I really loved Pod's moment singing Jenny's Song, but I couldn't help but be reminded of the (far superior IMHO) moment with Pippin and Denethor in Lord of the Rings. The showrunners have not shied away from comparisons between the Battle of Winterfell and Helm's Deep and I feel like the pacing of these first two episodes is really trying to evoke the feeling of "calm before the storm." Got me thinking how do you feel about this cinematic approach to season eight as a whole? We are 1/3 of the way through the season and very little has happened in terms of plot. Does the pacing work when we are waiting a week between episodes? Should they just have released the whole thing as two movies? I guess its hard to tell right in the middle of things, but I feel like they had to give up the signature cross-cutting POV feel, without gaining the magic of switching to a single location (as in the Blackwater episode).

Black Orchid

Sorry if this posts twice, it doesn't look like the first time I posted it saved. I know everyone is hot to trot on the "Night King raises the dead in the crypts" theory, but it doesn't really make sense, does it? Only the Lords of Winterfell/Kings of Winter and their families are buried there, and there aren't very many bodies that would be available to the Night King to raise. Lyanna, Ned (assuming his bones made it) and Brandon would be disarticulated skeletons. Possibly Rickard and definitely Rickon would be ashes. Even if the cold slowed decay somewhat, the only generation that would possibly still have flesh on their bones would be maybe Lyarra Stark, and Edwyle's generation, which would mean like, 10 people, tops. Do you think the showrunners are just going to say fuck it and show a bunch of reanimated corpses that couldn't possibly be there?

Erin

Was there any need for the Gendry Arya scene to be so.......erm....full on. I don't mind Arya saying she wanted to do it before she died that's absolutely fair enough, but maybe a kiss shot then a fade to the in bed afterwards shot. I didn't personally mind the scene - it surprised me which was good it gave Arya agency, but I know many people were slightly perturbed by Maisie being neked! Your thoughts gents 💜

Lady Dayne the Twighlight Star

Not really episode 2 but I'm curious on your thoughts regarding Qyburn saying "Cersei has different plans for the Targ girl". What plans might these be? Faceless man?

Rob Suelzle

Did Jenny’s song have new lyrics that weren’t in the books? If so, do you think GRRM wrote them?

Robert Hanff

Since Dany found it convenient that Bran (Jon's brother) ans Sam (Jon's best friend) were the ones who told him about his parentage. do you think we will need another character to substantiate the claim....someone like Howland Reed????

Kinga Taylor

I think it's a bold bit of lampshading for the characters to keep reminding us that Tyrion hasn't done anything intelligent since he sent all the forces to casterly rock and got the Tyrell army slaughtered...but then also blindly say he's still the best man to be hand. With the set up, I thought Dany was about to offer the position to Sansa (which would have been kinda brilliant). Is this leading somewhere? If episode 4-6 are battles amongst the living, does Tyrion stay Hand?

Gritty Reboot

Did you guys hear how safe it is down in the crypts!?!?!?! No way are tall those corpses going to come to life. Lets put our most vulnerable down there.

Eric Cumming

We're all a bit vulnerable after that episode so I'd like to exploit that for a second: What hypothetical event next week has the potential to be the most emotionally devastating? Sandor dying to defend Arya or Sansa? Theon, in a call back to some of the most haunting dialogue to ADwD, telling Bran he should have died with Robb but is glad to die here, for Robb's family, instead? Davos dying to defend a child? Brienne saving Jaime at the cost of her own life? Only half joking because I honestly don't know how the series can match, let alone top, what we just saw. It was meant to be a setup for next week but it was, in itself, a payoff nearly without equal in this show or media in general. Thanks guys, love this added feature from you!

Frank B

Hi guys! The show seems to be setting up a conflict between Jon and Dany. Could this be the second dance of dragons? Do you think we will see a similar conflict in the books as the "real"/second dance of dragons? Looking forward to your analysis as always!

Anne

What did you guys think of the way they did the “I’m a Targ” scene with Jon and Dany?

Guy Incognito

Are y'all gonna do a Death Pool for the Patreons for Ep 8.3?? Winner gets a shout-out/question for a future episode this season??
