Thanks for the Episode! On the chevauchée-Part: Maybe GRRM also referenced later, early modern conflicts? When you talked about the devastation of the riverlands, the first historical analogy I thought of was the Thirty Years War 1618-1648. The Holy Roman Empire lost about a quarter of its population, some regions even more than a half. The reason was mostly because the troops were made of mercenaries who had to live off the lands they crossed, "The war will feed itself" etc. Poland-Lithuania was also similarly ravaged during the Second Northern War 1655-1660. To be fair, these are tragedies long time after the medieval times, but still quite famous (at least the 30J. War in Germany), so maybe they could have factored in.
