Demonic Realm/Underworld

Hey guys 👋
Need a bit of help. I've been thinking about establishing an underworld sort of dimension in the story for an important arc (I won't focus too much on it, but it'll play a role in the story). Been trying to look into every reference of such a realm in Naruto.

There's no direct mention of such a realm, or it'd have made my job quite easier, but there are several references. Tayuya's summons could potentially have a connection to such a realm. Then there's the Shinigami that the Reaper Death Seal summons. The most direct reference which could prove such a realm I found was Morya from the movie.

That said, I'm not sure if I have covered every reference. Need your help to ensure I don't miss anything and what I create stays consistent with the original story. So, please let me know if there are any other references, or even direct mentions, that I am not aware of (or can't recall).

PS: Even references from Boruto are fine. If you wanna add anything original, that's fine too :)

Thanks :)

Acho interessante a ideia dele ir numa forma de alma, talvez em busca de compreender a alma, se fortalecer..

I think enough reference has been given to think it a possibility within Canon story, just not explored. But even if not. I think this would be a great direction to explore, you are already exploring beyond Canon into Jashin and given the foreknowledge these Cultists were given of Fujin, his whereabouts and abilities. They knew exactly when to finish the ritual by to avoid Fujin and to fully destroy their bodies so he would be unable to read their memories. These cultists couldn't have known all that... but an extra dimensional entity of unknown power and ability who can't reside on the material plane...? What of this Prophecy from Fujin's summons, what is this next level that they so badly need the help of a human summoner to reach? You have already expanded the world itself and the world of Summons quite significantly from Canon and to be honest.... a type of Demonic Realm/ Underworld be it physical or extra dimensional could fit pretty well into these unexplored cracks in the story and world. I am unsure on your current plan for these things which have been set up quite awhile ago but.... to me it fits.

Cool idea. Thanks :)

Thanks bud. No need to apologize, the more ideas the better for me :)

Yeah, my intention was something similar. That's why I didn't directly mention hell.

Hadn't thought of Angels. Let's see :)

an intresting idea would be sannin mode, if there is a demonic version of it perhaps or have the sannin mode itself be the norm in the underworld. Not much is explained about nature's chakra other than it's from nature and cannot be learned other than in the continent of the summons. So perhaps that continent has a gate to the underworld or the underworld would be another type of nature's chakra, cause so far we saw that that the first hokage's sannin mode is different than that of Jiraya and different that that of orochimaru's son in Boruto. so perhaps either use the demon's sannin mode as an upgrade mode or a type in of it self ?

I want to add a bit for some of the Pure land suggestions and how people are talking about souls go to the pure lands, maybe the underworld will essentially have all the negative energy of the world fall to it and will essentially be the main worlds trashcan where broken and damaged souls go, and truly evil or negative souls or spirits too. It could also be where the yin half of spirits(lets say if kurama wasn’t sealed with minato) would end up residing. The underworld i’d imagine would be similar to the main world in how it looks but the desolate and negative energy would be thick and would also wear away at pure and solid spirit or soul overtime like a miasma. I wouldn’t like seeing anything with clan’s down there unless it was let’s say a super strong ancestor who’s soul was broken but now he’s in a crazy state and he believes his clan is still alive, however i wouldn’t like seeing anything about the uzumaki clan being there unless it was a so called “testing” area for their jutsu’s. Though i could see Jashin being some sort of demon god similar to the Otsutsuki who was born from the negative miasma from the main world and formed having a similar power level to the Otsutsuki, it could also play well into the boruto era of how the Otsutsuki wonder why the Naruto world is so special and different from others and how it could form a god fruit and god tree. It could be that the world is special because it has two original paralled dimensions that being the underworld and mainlands feeding the god tree and not just one. Sorry for the many different thoughts but id just like to see some well thought out additions without any crazy stretches to the world that could be retconned by canon with boruto continuing

# References to a Demonic Realm/Underworld in the Naruto Universe Here is a comprehensive list of references to the concept of a Demonic Realm/Underworld within the Naruto, Naruto Shippuden, and Boruto universe, covering sources from the manga, anime (including fillers), movies, and games. ## 1. References in the Manga and Anime (Canon) ### 1.1. Shinigami and the Reaper Death Seal - The Shinigami is an entity summoned by the Reaper Death Seal (Shiki Fūjin). - Its appearance and role in the technique suggest that it rules a spiritual domain where sealed souls remain trapped in eternal suffering. ### 1.2. Tayuya’s Demonic Summons - Tayuya of the Sound Four summons demonic creatures (doki), whose souls might be connected to a dark spiritual realm. - These creatures possess ethereal characteristics, with stitched mouths and aggressive behavior. ### 1.3. Jashin and Hidan - The Jashin cult suggests the existence of a demonic underworld. - Hidan, Jashin’s most notorious follower, mentions sacrificial rituals and eternal torture. - Hidan’s immortality could be linked to an infernal dimension controlled by Jashin. ### 1.4. The Infinite Tsukuyomi World - Madara and Kaguya create an imprisoning reality within the Infinite Tsukuyomi. - Itachi’s Tsukuyomi also showcases an alternate space controlled by his will, which can be interpreted as a personal purgatory. ### 1.5. Kaguya’s Dimension - Kaguya Otsutsuki travels between different dimensions, one of which features lava and darkness. - This dimension could be interpreted as a hellish realm in the Naruto universe. ### 1.6. The Naraka Path of the Rinnegan - Nagato use the Naraka Path, which manifests as the King of Hell (Jigokudou). - It judges souls and sends them to a realm of suffering before restoring them. --- ## 2. Movies and OVAs ### 2.1. Moryo (Naruto Shippuden: The Will of Fire) - Moryo is a sealed demon who attempted to dominate the world. - He mentions a "Spirit World" where he resides. - His appearance and powers suggest he might be connected to a hellish dimension. ### 2.2. The Demon World (Naruto the Movie: Guardians of the Crescent Moon Kingdom) - The villain Haido attempts to access a demonic dimension that would grant him absolute power. ### 2.3. The World of Souls (Naruto Shippuden: The Movie) - The priestess Shion has the ability to banish demonic souls to another plane. - The antagonist, Yomi, tries to access this world to release demonic forces. ### 2.4. The Blood Prison (Naruto Shippuden: Blood Prison) - The Blood Prison (Hōzuki Castle) functions as a hell on earth, where prisoners endure endless torture. - Mui, the prison warden, uses the Tenrō Seal to condemn prisoners to an inevitable death. --- ## 3. Fillers and Games ### 3.1. Chakra Hell (Naruto Shippuden - Bijuu Arc Filler) - During a battle with the tailed beasts, one of them mentions a chaotic dimension where the beasts can be imprisoned. ### 3.2. The Spirit World (Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Game) - In some versions of the game, there are missions where characters interact with spirits of deceased shinobi, suggesting a ninja underworld. --- ## 4. Original Elements for the Fanfic Hey Hex, if your wants to expand this idea, here are some suggestions: - Create a Demonic Underworld that serves as a prison for shinobi sealed by the Reaper Death Seal. - Develop a lost clan that worships Jashin, possessing soul-manipulation abilities, Fuinjutsu and Juinjutsu. - Introduce a secret dimension connected to the Naraka Path, where judged souls await reincarnation. This should help in building a Demonic Realm/Underworld consistent with the Naruto universe! Good luck! 👊 Note: If you copy and paste my comment into a website or program that has a markdown preview, such as this website: https://markdownlivepreview.com/ My comment will be more readable and organized.

Aetherist

I think what would be helpful if you explained it as a function of chakra. So we have a logical understanding of demonic chakra or whatever you want to do.

faintmeteor

It doesn’t necessarily need to be a Hell. We know that the dead still bearing attachments remain in a kind of limbo. These are the ones that can be summoned back to life. If they don’t have attachments or resolve them, they go on to the pure land. Since the ones summoned back don’t remember anything happening since their death, you could imagine its kind of like the show «Severance». Or perhaps an Infinite Tsukuyomi like state, where their dream is a reflection of their karma and how they lived their life. Also, it is said that the progenitor of the Ōtsutsuki clan reached such a high level that he left his body behind and ascended to a higher dimention. This suggests that there are several dimentions, with some higher and some lower. The beings in the higher dimentions obviously have different powers and have ascended in different ways. With the «zero tails» we know that power can materialize from metaphysical concepts such as human malice. Maybe that could also be the case with the «Death Reaper». It could be a higher being not necessarily associated with death, but the power to extricate souls in exchange for ones own. Perhaps through something like karma or similar? And through specific seals one can summon part of that higher being to take action. So instead of making it complicated with Heaven and Hell and Whatnot, it’s all just different dimentions.

Mat Hias

In the story "talisman emperor" he receives an inheritance from the underworld..samara..which gives him the control of life and death and afterlife...which makes sense for fujin cuz of his transmigration

Kwabena Kumi

Probably the underworld fits his character more cuz of his shamelessness and selfishness....but because of the downsides of the under world's techniques with corruption etc...his careful nature is gonna want something that won't threaten is sanity life or soul..with Angel's itll have effects but not as harsh as hells/underworld...or u can distinguish the difference between the underworld or hells to give an understanding of the affects of the abilities on him cuz all techniques/abilities isn't bad

Kwabena Kumi

Hex I know u mentioned demon/underworld have u ever thought above the heavens with Angels..it being 2 sides of the same coin...itll be fun to explore or touch on

Kwabena Kumi

I don't pay much mind to Naruto filler content. The core of the story consists of being on different continents. There isn't any mention of higher or lower realms. I believe it's better to introduce different plains that have not been discovered. The series consists of its own world, so it's easy to introduce a different plain that hasn't been discovered by humans.

Derrick Mills

One thing I thought of was the uzumaki mask storage temple with one of the masks summoning the shinigami, and all the masks are ONI masks if I remember right, that might be one avenue to exploring more when it comes to an underworld

Kelevra

I especially home you’ll go very deep when it comes to the Sage’s powers and whether Fujin will one day reach that level as he continues to absorb bijuu powers and other otherworldly powers

Kelevra

Well I can say I have very high expectations and hope you’ll continue exploring different dimensions/powers if you end up introducing an underworld

Kelevra

The consequences of having death as ur power is nothing lives in ur presence....not that extreme but close

Kwabena Kumi

U got all the examples here...lol..but soul corruption is too harsh....u can use fairy tails dark wizard...whatever he touches dies or withers

Kwabena Kumi

Hey hex if you need more "inspiration" you could do what Kishimoto (narutos creator) did and take inspiration from dragon ball and yu yu hakusho you could totally take elements of the demon world from yu yu hakusho cuz that shi looks cool affff. And you could totally pull a "well kishimoto took inspiration so why cant i 🤓☝️" well i hope that helps... if it didnt then oh well 🤷‍♂️

Jonnylawz0

Actual real one for this sheeeesh

Jonnylawz0

Don't know of any mentions, but could have it be the opposite of the pure world like in naruto

YHBA

Just a thought but reaper death seal came from the uzumaki If I remember right people also talked about Jashin being in the death underworld catagory both seal heavy groups so maybe next level of seal related information can be found there side note people also talked about pain was also an uzumaki and the rinnegan has death related aspects uzumaki just seems part of it maybe a side branch uzumaki clan in the underworld or they moved there without being completely destroyed uzumaki means swirl/spiral so maybe they named themselves that partially because they had a spiral portal to the underworld that gave them there main strength fĹŤinjutsu just throwing out ideas hope something helps love your book

Brandon Sureda

There is also the dragon Palace that toneri was sealed in for thousands of years. this is filler so you can easily ignore it

Thanks mate 😄

Devil Hex

We know yokai exist,we also know jashin exists and for what I think is the god of death in the reaper death seal

Mohammed Sheekh

Funny enough, why I imagine fujin go crazy in underworld, if he manages to enter it like his times in land of sand 😂

Book Warm

Thanks :)

Devil Hex

The fact that there are elements of the demon/underworld...shows there is a thing u can explore..I dont know how everyone feels but the powers of pain is not of the ninja world..him attaining those powers is what made him almost impossible to beat...1 person having all of that makes him invincible...but it creates an opportunity for fujin to get similar energies or abilities....the route u take can be created by urself through the technique...or knowledge through the summons

Kwabena Kumi

Outside of the Land of Demons from the movie (which is a physical country and not a realm) there's not alot of references other than justu. Buuuuuuuut it would be a way to group together some of the odder bits and pieces like Jashin, all the justu with "demon" in it, the Rashamon gates or some of the weirder body horror/biopunk kekkai genkai like Sakon/Ukon. You can kinda go ham and while people might not like Boruto as a story, not liberally stealing ideas, tech, and jutsu from there is just leaving free money on the table from a writing standpoint. It's your story. GO NUTS.

devildham

Perhaps the underworld or the world of all evil spirits can be in another dimension. Or maybe it exists somewhere beyond the continent like some summoning lands. And even better if this is the place where Hagoromo Otsutsuki collected all the evil spirits and sealed them in some area. Like this technique, only much larger in scale. https://naruto.fandom.com/wiki/Space%E2%80%93Time_Technique_Formula:_Underworld_Turnover Basically, this technique keeps souls locked up. Unfortunately, we weren't told whether souls would continue to exist in this barrier if the body died, but as an idea, I think it's fine.

TrustZee

Damn, that was quick!

Greedsmith

Well if you havent yet found it there's the king of hell from the naraka path of pain. (his summon)

Cesar GM

Wish I could help, but it's just been too long since I've watched the anime again. I think it's been at least 5 years since my rewatch. Sorry. Maybe you could link the Underworld with the Pure Land? That way Edo Tensei could also kinda indirectly be linked to it. Maybe a modified version could summon demons or something. Idk, I'm just spitballing here.

Naruto References to an Underworld-Like Realm 1. Tayuya’s Summons (Doki) • The origin of Tayuya’s summons is never explained, but their ghostly and demonic appearances, as well as their ability to manifest spectral chakra entities, could imply a connection to an underworld-like realm. 2. Reaper Death Seal & the Shinigami • The Shinigami, summoned through the Reaper Death Seal, is a clear reference to an afterlife or underworld entity. The fact that it stores souls within its stomach suggests a separate plane of existence where these souls remain trapped. • Orochimaru later extracts the souls from the Shinigami’s stomach, reinforcing the idea that it exists as a distinct realm. 3. Naruto Shippuden Movie 4: The Lost Tower (Moryo & the Spirit Realm) • Moryo is a powerful demon sealed within a spirit world, suggesting the existence of a demonic plane where malevolent entities originate. • The spirit world concept could be expanded to include an underworld-like realm. 4. The Pure Land (Jōdo) • The Pure Land is referenced multiple times in Naruto as the place where souls go after death. This could be seen as a “heavenly” counterpart to an underworld, but it also implies the possibility of a darker, opposing realm. 5. Hidan’s Jashin Rituals • Hidan’s connection to Jashin and his immortality could suggest a link to an underworldly force. We don’t know where Jashin originates from, but his demands for sacrifices and apparent ability to grant immortality suggest an extra-dimensional entity with influence over death. 6. Kaguya’s Dimensions (Lava Dimension) • One of Kaguya’s dimensions (the Lava Dimension) resembles a hellish landscape, possibly drawing inspiration from underworld myths. It isn’t explicitly an underworld, but it could be reimagined as one. 7. Kirin & the Natural Lightning from the “Heavens” • Sasuke’s Kirin technique references heavenly forces, but if we consider balance in Naruto’s world, there could be an underworldly equivalent. Boruto References to an Underworld-Like Realm 1. Kashin Koji’s Summoning (Flames of Purgatory) • Kashin Koji’s technique, which summons flames that “erase all traces” of a person, has a distinctly supernatural feel. It could suggest an underworld connection. 2. Jigen & Isshiki Ōtsutsuki’s Karma Space • When Isshiki Ōtsutsuki dies, he doesn’t go to a normal afterlife but ceases to exist entirely. However, since Karma functions as a reincarnation mechanism, there could be an underworld-related function involved. 3. The Juubi’s Prison & Otsutsuki Feeding Ground • The Otsutsuki keep the Ten-Tails imprisoned in a desolate realm where they harvest chakra from worlds they consume. This location could be reimagined as a hellish underworld. Original Expansion Ideas • A Realm for the Forgotten Dead Since the Pure Land exists as the final resting place for souls, you could introduce a parallel realm where lost, cursed, or forsaken souls wander instead of passing on. This could be where beings like the Shinigami or Jashin originate. • A Plane of Sealed Beings The Naruto world is filled with sealing techniques—what if all sealed entities were sent to the same underworld-like space? This could explain where Moryo, the Reaper Death Seal souls, and even Tayuya’s summons originate. • Underworld Sage Mode If there is a Sage Mode derived from nature, maybe a forbidden one exists from the underworld. It could grant immense power but come with extreme consequences, like body deterioration or soul corruption. Would love to hear how you plan to implement it!

Colin

I'm not well versed in it, but I know the Rinnegan is based off of the six realms of samsara, with one of them being hell. There's a lot of Buddhist references in Naruto, the Pure Land is another one, since Zabuza thought he'd be going to hell but ended up in "heaven" instead (Though, the word "Hell" is mentioned multiple times in the story, so we can deduce that there is some sort of legend around it in the narutoverse, but thats all). We can probably assume that the Pure land is for humans, and hell is for demonic beings, not sure how heaven plays into it though, since it is mentioned.
