November Life Update - Taking a Break from...

I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving this month!

Lots of things continue to change for me.

I think they are good changes too but definitely unexpected.

Let me explain, because it will affect this Patreon

Remember back in my "August Update" I said that I was pausing work on CALL ME HALLOW for various reasons? Well, I've decided to officially put it on the back-burner until further notice. Once the episodes start coming out on Macroverse I will be able to decide how to proceed. But for now, I just had to stop the production of pages.

After that, I thought I had a good and proven game plan by focusing on the "Comic Incubator" class last month to solve my financial problems...

BUT...

Very few people signed up for the LIVE version and so I had to cancel and refund the few orders that I got.

Then I launched the lower priced version (without my live participation and critiques) and only got a handful of students purchase that one as well.

SooOOOOoooo, it kinda helped me to understand that I might need to focus on something else if I wanted to make money. haha

NOW I'M NOT COMPLAINING, I'm actually happy about this because it brings more clarity. Sometimes when it seems like there are a lot of amazing options, it's hard to decide which one to focus on. So now, I can take a few options off my plate, close a few doors, and focus on other things.

SO SHOULD I FOCUS IN COGNITIVE DRAWING?

Cognitive Drawing keeps selling at a reasonable pace and I just delivered the last box of the Female Cognitive Drawing to my distributor this month. It looks like it will be sold out in about 4 or 5 months.

This is great news but the question is should I reprint it?

It will cost about $25,000 to reprint both books. GULP!

If I saved all the money coming in from the sales then I could probably reprint it and then hope that they keep selling slowly for the next 2 years and eventually I'd start making profit.

Or I could just let it go out of print and keep the money...

You probably guessed what I'm thinking. Keep the money.

But that means Cognitive Drawing will be out of print. I might make an Amazon POD version at that point and hope that the sales continue on autopilot from then on. I'll have to make that decision when they fully sell-out towards the middle of next year. :)

SO NOW WHAT?

Honestly, this has been a pressing question on my heart and mind for the last few years. I feel like I've been closing one door at a time and now I'm standing in front of the last few that I planned to use. Some shut in my face and some are not exciting anymore.

I could start working on Phobos again. I do love Phobos...

But my heart is elsewhere.

Many of you know I've been working on a Youtube channel about my fiancé in the Philippines. It's refreshing. It's new. It's different. And surprisingly it has been making more money than anything else I'm currently doing right now.

And it has led me to a new opportunity that I've been offered.

And...

I think I'm going to take it.

It has nothing to do with Hollywood or comics.

It has nothing to do with art.

But it's very creative. My heart in 100% into it. And the money is good.

So, I hesitate to say but my plan is to take a break from comics and art in 2024 to see where this new opportunity takes me. Who knows, it might be a whole new career for me. All I know is it will take all of my focus. But it's exciting, so that makes it easy. :)

Because of this, I don't really have any new comic stuff to show you for now. But I hope you can still stick around until the end of 2024 because things might change again after that. Haha

Plus I'll keep you updated here if anything does happen with my comics. Most likely the updates will be less often though.

Thanks so much for your support and I hope some of you stick around!

See you in the next update!

Jason

Comments

I’m late to comment here, but I wanted to say I’ve enjoyed pretty much all the work I’ve seen from you, so I’m sure whatever you do going forward will be great.

Take the money and run.

I've been silently following your life updates and it's still surprising to see these new venues you've found . As a comic artist, seeing your journey (the good and the bad) has been so valuable in my own career. I'm sorry some of these new comic plans have never lifted-off as you wished, but in the other hand, I'm glad you have found happiness with your new partner, and her culture. I wish you the best!

I love the idea about short little zine comics. That would be a fun way to keep the comic creativity alive. I have thought about making short stories about random stuff so it kinda fits with what I'm thinking. And yes, Phobos will continue when the time is right. ;) Thank you again!

Hey Tanya! Thanks for the thoughts. :) I will definitely keep this Patreon as long as there are people who want to stay. And I'm sure I can keep writing life updates too.

No matter what you do, I hope you'll keep this Patreon - I love reading your life updates! 😊 Have you ever considered creating much smaller art books, such as illustrated zines for example? I would defenetelly purchase a small sketchbook or a travel journal illustrated by you. It could be anything, from a must-visit illustrated guide to the Philippines to a short comic about your traveling, or anything you’re passionate about at the moment. Zines are typically cheap to print (like a small broushure) but despite their small size, artists often sell them at a reasonable price as they are quite unique and creative little things. P.S I absolutely love Phobos and secretly hope that you'll return to Phobos one day when you're ready. 🙏🏻😅

I’m in a bit of a hibernation art wise myself. Still creating behind the scenes, but family takes priority. I’ll support as long as I’m able! Enjoy the season God has places you in!!

Mia Pearce

I'm sticking with my support on Patreon. Best wishes as you continue creating.

When the path forward is illuminated for us it is wise to consider taking it. The cosmos has a way of providing opportunity and it is up to us to be ready to say “yes” and move forward. Wishing you all the best and I hope you’ll share more information about your adventures here as you get into it. Cheers!
