Thirty thousand lifetimes. That is the supposed age of the oldest relic anyone has ever found. Twenty thousand lifetimes. That is the supposed age of some of the most hidden ruins in the land. Six and ten thousand lifetimes. That is the age of the oldest piece of written history anyone has ever unearthed. Eight and ten hundred lifetimes. That is the age of the oldest song anyone can remember that isn't yet pure myth. Twenty lifetimes. That is the age of the oldest speaking being in the Shatter.
One lifetime. That is all any of us get.
I have spent mine to the fullest, traveling the wilds. I have visited every major settlement, and most of the minor. I have seen things most people wouldn't believe, and learned things most people wont. I've tasted more kinds of meat and mead than most people ever will. I hope someday to lay my eyes on every horizon in the Shatter, even if one lifetime isn't enough. I have spent my lifetime combing the whole world for answers, and yet I still do not know who I am. I have sunk my weapon into the dirt of a thousand kinds of soil, wiped my brow, and ended a thousand long and rewarding journeys, yet I have learned nothing new about myself. My weapon is heavy in my hand.
Yet, I have gained much. I have met people everywhere I go, warriors, survivors, thieves, scholars. I have made friends, and enemies. I have taken in beloved companions, tamed loyal beasts, forged valuable connections. I have been there for the fall of settlements, and the rise of new ones, and through it all the perseverance of adventurers and settlers alike is the force that drives back the chaos of the wilds. My quest for knowledge of the world has proven time and time again that the river of time washes away all, yet it always uncovers the best of the present. It is at the blossom of history, not its root, that I live- and this blossom is sweet.
I fear not what I do not know, and live every day of this life to the fullest, for tomorrow always brings a brighter tomorrow.
