Hit Save! funds a year of hosting for Lutris

Hit Save! is a non profit organization dedicated to the preservation of video games. One of their initiatives is helping open source projects that share similar goals by providing them with funds. 

A few weeks ago, I was approached by Rich McGrath and Jonas Rosland of HitSave on our Discord server, generously offering to provide the Lutris project with funds that would cover some of our costs and benefit the community. While I initially asked for help funding the "Lutris console 3", since that was on my mind a lot back then (more on that in a later post), we eventually agreed on funds to cover the cost of the various hosting services we use (OVH, Digital Ocean, Sendgrid) for 2024. 

I'm very grateful to HitSave for providing us with these funds and recognize the value of Lutris as a game preservation effort. A large part of our user base use Lutris to play games that are currently being sold and maintained by their developers but it has always been a goal for Lutris to support as many games as we can, covering as many gaming platforms as possible. When Valve became invested in Linux gaming, it cemented the position of Linux as a viable platform to run games on. With the evolution coming from the Steam Deck's development, Linux became a robust platform to run games on. With Lutris, we shifted our priorities a bit. From an open gaming platform for Linux, we became a video game preservation platform. That doesn't mean we provide less support for the current generation of games (and those too will eventually need to be preserved). It means that in addition of modern games, we provide as much as we can to facilitate playing games that are no longer supported by their creators. 

For Lutris, it is a very nice way to end 2023, a year that was already incredibly good for Linux gaming! I hope we hear more about Hit Save! in the future, I've agreed to participate in one of their livestreams so I'll let everyone know if that happens!
