(GMTK Mini) Blue Prince: Can a random puzzle game actually work?

Hello Patrons!

I am finishing up development on my new game, so mostly focused on that right now. But I couldn't pass up an opportunity to discuss Blue Prince - a super "design-y" game with some interesting stuff to discuss in terms of puzzles, randomness, and genre mash-ups.

Cheers!

(GMTK Mini) Blue Prince: Can a random puzzle game actually work?

Comments

Me too. Maybe he had a special build where he could choose any room to playtest space and so on. But playtesting the actual build is curious indeed

Fran

The randomness means that when a lock and key line up in the same run, it feels great. It’s the dopamine hit of a box of bombs and jetpack in Spelunky 1-1. The friction elevates every discovery, every step of forward progress. It just feels great when five moving parts click into place, and satisfying as anything when you manipulate the randomness to make it do that.

I’d be curious to see how he tested it when every element is random.

Also, I disagree stronglly with some of the stuff you say in this. You sometimes sound like you want to change the game in a way that woulld push me away... :P You see, I didn't like Outer Wilds, not because of it's structure but because moving around was awful... I'm not keen on games of enigma and riddles but this one hooked me, even though I probably won't play the post endgame too much. I disagree about the game "not respecting your time", quite the opposite in fact: you don't have to 100% games to be a gamer. ;) While I understand some "roll of the die" can be frustrating to some, sometimes, I think this is besides the point of this game. Additionaly, without that part, I probably wouldn't have looked twice at the game and I doubt I'm the only one in that position.

Good points. I've just put it down, having given up on the endgame stuff. It is a great game, but your comment about not respecting your time is very valid.

Interesting, just saw Millard's video about the false hardness of it...

What new game are you developing?
