First let me start with the unpopular opinion. The Nazis were not a different kind of evil. I would even go so far as to say that they were not evil. This sort of thing is part of humanity. It has been for as long as humans have existed. It still is today. What allowed the holocaust to happen was mob rule and the absence of social controls. So in a very real way they were not evil, but simply humans without social controls. We are seeing a resurgence of this part of humanity in many places in the world as leaders of one group preach the destruction of our social contract through hatred and dehumanizing of other groups. So you see, Nature is violent! The ideal society is empathetic. As decent humans we must choose every day to follow social rules and not give in to our base natures. To be clear, I am NOT saying that this was acceptable, right or good! But we must acknowledge the history and the rest of the worlds complicity in effecting the solution to the Jewish question. This was called the Final Solution because earlier solutions did not work. Initially, the Nazis wanted to relocate the Jews in Germany to other countries. Most countries however refused immigration of all but a small handful of Jews. A fact that Nazi justification propaganda made great effort to exploit. That the rest of the world did not want the Jews "contaminating" their streets. Then the nazis pushed for a Jewish state. Only after this was shut down by the world community once again did the nazis begin planning the final solution. Inna you said that you "forgot" about the camps until you saw it here. But, I would say that you did not so much forget, but only suffered from historical bias. You grew up in a world where everyone knows about the holocaust. It is common historical knowledge. It is nearly impossible to imagine a world where it did not exist in the common human experience. But until this point in history very few people knew about it. There are thousands of historical events that share communal knowledge. Covid, 9/11, Pearl Harbor.... These are all events that just the mention of them and nearly everyone knows what you are saying. The Holocaust is part of a far more rare type of event. Those that fundamentally changed the world we live in. The first man in space, the first time man walked on the moon, the invention of the computer, the development of the internet. This show did a very good job in fostering that bias with things like the article that was being read on the truck that said the Germans were "bad." Everyone hears that and the immediate thought is about the Jews. But the impact is made more powerful when they reveal that these men had no idea the camps existed. With that one little trick the show gets your mind to dismiss the camps as a possible focus of the episode. Last for a little bit of interesting symbolism. The episode begins and ends with the men playing Beethoven and the German people cleaning up. Lutz even makes the comment that the Germans sure clean up good. The mention of Mozart, who was born in Austria the same as Hitler, gives symbolic meaning to the fact that German culture and the German people are what was needed to clean up the devastation caused by the Austrian corporal.
