Yeah, beach vs caves... both have good points. Though I would say that easy access to fresh water is the priority. But like you said, I don't see why there just couldn't be a rotating contingent on beach duty. The beach makes for a much prettier filming backdrop. It's funny to me that most turn to Jack to lead them... but when he decides something, they complain. Sounds about right actually. I'd want to be where the doctor is.

Unless that's their surname (a much worse pun than yours). To quote the song this episode is named after, Kate has 'one foot on the platform, the other on the train' - as do the rest of the beach people, hoping for rescue. 'Tell your children not to do what I have done - spend your lives in sin and misery' is another line from that song, something Jack, Charlie and Locke are trying to move on from.
