So you don't worry... early on, the show runners told the fandom that they wouldn't guarantee any characters' survival except for Vincent the dog. They promised nothing would happen to him. Another reason I love this show. Even fictional, pet demises hits me hard.

I feel like Jack's dad had decent intentions in his advice to young Jack... that you can't fix everything & if you take it all on your shoulders, it will become too heavy to bear.... but he completely botched the delivery. Just left his son with a demoralizing 'you don't have what it takes'.
Also - Jack's dad saying that he himself can shake off his losses and just leave them behind him... making him better at what he does. I'm like... are. you. sure? Because it looks like you need a nightly highball, and possibly more, to not dwell on the failures.
Personally, I'd want someone like Jack around... who doesn't like to give up, who deeply needs to fix the problem, who takes it all to heart. I think that's better than the alternative.
