Great thoughts! Excited for the journey. I think you have a good grasp of the structure since you watched OUaT... whose Creators took so much inspiration from their time on Lost.
In the 2nd half of the Pilot... after the Marshall got knocked out on the plane... Kate removed her handcuffs, but then made sure to put an oxygen mask on the unconscious Marshall. Seeing her do that for the biggest threat to her freedom... as well as risking her chance to escape by saving Ray... Whatever she did... those moments tell me all I need to know about her humanity right now.

In the words of Willow Rosenberg, 'tabula rasa, tabula rasa, tabula rasa'. The blank slate. She wanted a blank slate and couldn't get one; these people have got one by default. Even if it does matter what they did, they've been forced into new lives now, at least for the moment.
The idea of starting over was very big in 2004 (and in 2005, when this first came to the UK and thus to me) - living through the first few years after 9/11 meant having a different view of the world and how dangerous it was. Especially for me at 17, already having to start over as an A-level student after a lifetime of having had no choice but to be in school.
This ending song ('Wash Away', by Joe Purdy) is one I heard for the first time in this episode and one I come back to a lot for a sense of peace, which I also get from this reaction. 'I got troubles, oh, but not today: they're gonna wash away.'
Interesting that you call this a lowkey 3rd pilot episode - it first aired in the UK on August 10th 2005 on E4, right after the first two parts had aired on Channel 4, as part of their 'First Look' initiative where you could watch next week's episode now. So for me a third pilot episode is absolutely what it is - I had to bite my tongue back in August to admit to myself that I should recommend you stop the pilot reaction at two.
Evangeline Lilly actually is Canadian, so it's probably not the first time she's had to say that to someone thinking she's from the US.
