That goes with what I was thinking. Elena would only miss 3 years. It would of course not work if the roles were reversed as we found out with Katherine.

One cure, only works for one at a time. But theoretically it would work like this... Elena takes the cure and becomes human, then Damon can take the cure out of her, removing it from her. The down side of removing the cure out of a former vampire is that it ages them... but only to as old as they would really be. For Katherine, that was centuries. For Elena, she would only age a couple of years. So she'd be fine. But Damon would have to keep the cure in his system for the rest of his life (or start aging 150ish years). And hope no one ever tries to get it out of him. He would grow old normally as long as the cure stays in his system.
