This episode reminds me strongly of the Stephen King short story 'I Am The Doorway', about a mission to Venus. Always creeped me out, that one - in a good way. But I could have done without Belt's particular style of moaning here.
Marcus Aurelius Belt was presumably named after Marcus Aurelius, a Roman emperor know for his philosophical writings about the importance of living a virtuous life. This one certainly had a virtuous death.
It must have come off as even tackier and potentially upsetting in 1993 to be referencing the Challenger disaster for this plot. Like trying to make a Doctor Who episode now about alien ghosts starting fires in tower blocks and mentioning Grenfell as an example.
I was trying to figure out where I'd seen Michelle Generoo before and had to look it up. Turns out it was 20 years later, when her character's husband and son get shipwrecked off Lian Yu.
