It's true she will leave everything and come here, plus she has the campus mystery too to deal with like Megan, her dad etc so Damon is doing this for Elena and he will take care of the things here it only shows Damon cares for Elena alot and obvs also will do anything to save his baby bro.

I will only say you will get all the answers it's a little complicated I understand the whole of the cure thing etc. I love how the start gives a very different feel to the season also seeing a different location helps and seeing new faces too unfortunate for Megan who lasted for a short while lol 😂
