Mitchum might think a lot of himself but he has no idea how to approach a person with drive issues. If Rory's heart isn't it in, she should be left alone to gravitate naturally to the administrative sector or wherever she wants to go. You don't fix low self-confidence by telling someone they just don't have what it takes. 'Are you sure that this is where you want to be?' might have been more appropriate. Mitchum's behaviour here reminds me of the newsmen from Stranger Things S3 towards Nancy. I don't blame Melville here. Ishmael waited for a commission to go to sea, rather than just going by any means necessary. Perhaps Rory would have been better off bringing up the rear of any funeral she saw. I like to think of that one supportive town elder as the Source of all Hollow.
