Forgot to mention - my personal view is that the Avatars' ultimate destiny is to serve humanity in the far future, once humans have evolved the natural ability to behave as they do in 'utopia' here. The stunted grief, the erasing of conflicting people, are both things that show that it's not time for the Avatars yet. But they represent the potential for the eventual force and power of humanity. A battery, rather than a secret police. Personal take on free will is that it will always exist, but that what the Avatars have taken away is freedom of expression. You can still do what you want, but they'll erase you if they don't like it. As soon as you said 'it defines us', I thought 'as much as happiness or love', then I thought 'where have I heard that before?' Thankfully you immediately saved me from having to Google.
