I don’t think I’ve explained enough just how much I love this scene for what it tells me about how far they’ve come in their relationship. When they first met each other, Xena never showed any of this emotion and this vulnerability until she was sure Gabrielle couldn’t see her. But here she’s not even trying to hide away from her and cover herself up. She even lets Gabrielle comfort her while she sits there with tears in her eyes. And then there’s Gabrielle who also just sits there silently with her sharing her pain, her losses, her absolute hopelessness. When did this change and switch happen? Have they influenced and affected each other so much emotionally that they’ve swapped roles in this hurt/comfort relationship?
I mean this episode ain’t particularly significant when it comes to their relationship, but this ending scene. THIS VERY MOMENT IS EVERYTHING!

Another great script from the hand of Steven Sears. Very interesting to see in flashback moments previously discussed in the series such as Borias becoming the more honourable man mentioned to Solan in Orphan of War and the outbreak of Xena's war against the Centaurs. Borias' death is particularly poignant. We had actually seen the encounter between Xena and Kaleipus previously however it was re-shot and given a more emotional resonance for this episode. I do love how assertive Gabrielle is when Xena continually tries to keep her out of the battle to protect her from the possible fate in the vision. Gabrielle's strength just grows and grows and she's determined to face the future without the fear Xena has for it. I have to just say, tied in with my comments previously about Crusader, how ironic it is in the next episode we have flashbacks to a fanatical Xena ranting about mass crucifixtions after her antipathy towards the "religious zealot" Najara.

I feel bad for Borias. It is clear he had a significant streak of goodness and compassion in him and no doubt he could be redeemed like Xena had he survived to present day.
Speaking of Gabrielle's short hair in the vision, you know what Xena and Gabrielle should do before going to drastic lengths like splitting up permanently? Xena should shave her head and Gabrielle should dye her hair black. That way, the vision is guaranteed not to happen until Xena grows her hair back and Gabrielle's blonde roots reach near her shoulders. XD
