Xena’s so much happier when she’s around Gabrielle. I just love seeing it. The change.

You should watch the blooper reel for Season 4. There’s an absolutely hilarious blooper by Renee in this episode. She brings it up a lot in interviews when asked whether there’s anything really embarrassing she remembers doing when filming the show.

Gabrielle was about to throw the bucket at “Philepon the Reformer” if he mentioned writing as a sin.

I thought it was sung by Lucy Lawless? Certainly sounds like Lucy.

I also meant to mention this is the second episode of Xena directed by Michael (Iolaus) Hurst and as ever he does a great job.

On the subject of Bruce Campbell and Dr Strange, there is a certain cameo in the new movie you may have missed ;-) Speaking of Dr Strange, there was a rather cool TV movie made in 1978 that is worth a look that was going to be the pilot for a proposed series.
Back to Xena though and this is a very fun episode with some quite serious and more relevant than ever themes underneath its humour. I do love that this show can mix those different elements so well. I also love how feisty Gabrielle is in this episode and some of Renee's theatrical dance background comes in very handy here.
I'm also glad you missed Bruce Campbell's credit so you got a genuine happy surprise with his appearance. And even though i was not chomping at the bit for the return of Tara, she was a lot more likable in this story (Not having some savage unprovoked attacks on Gabrielle sure helped too).
The song Let The Spirit Move Me sung by Gillian Iliana Waters is very nice too.

Remember all those season 2 episodes where Gabrielle would do alright in a fight for a while then randomly get beaten by a nameless goon and need to be saved? I'm glad that, even when her fighting isn't at all the focus in an episode like this, we are seeing subtle but steady progress in her skills. She takes on multiple henchmen on her own all the time now.
