Once again:
Without the emotional conflict and tension of Gabrielle’s involvement in this episode, it’s just another Xena vs Caesar cat-and-mouse game.
Steven L. Sears knows how to make the serious implications of war really sit in the soul.
“It was a good day of fighting.”

This is a top 10 episode of the series for me! Loved the title, it was "a good day" because the battle was won and the village can now go back to prosper in peace... but from the point of view of a villager, they had to burn down their entire life that day, lost many fathers and husbands, and at least one young boy lost his blood innocence and childhood. Somehow Temecula killing for the first time got me tearing up worse than Phlanagus dying. And to have this all put on Gabrielle because she led the "successful" battle and failed to kill the Roman soldier before he murdered Phlanagus was such a big step in terms of her character depth.
Speaking of which, the first of Alti's flash forwards have come true. That's the unspoken significance of the visions: not only does Gabrielle continue to struggle with life alongside a warrior, she'll die if stays by Xena's side. This is surely something massively on Xena's mind as well.

A MASSIVE improvement on the last episode and for me the show back to its real top form since Sacrifice last season. The stakes are always raised when Caesar makes an appearance!
Very powerful episode indeed and Renee's acting especially in the last quarter really breaks my heart when she fails to save Phlanagus. The whole last 10 minutes of this episode are an incredible mixture of acting, direction and scoring -Joseph LoDuca once again proving in this episode what a powerful component he brought to this series with its music. Love the slow-motion and montage sequences and overlays - really adds to the drama and intensity and as the show has continued the battle and action sequences are stepping up in gravitas along with it. Great directon by Rick Jacobson.
Totally right with your comment about the shorthand between Xena and Gabrielle by this point. Gabrielle especially as you say went though SO much in Season 3 and her journey continues to challenge her here. Some exceptional character development though it also hurts my heart at times. The fact this is another Steven Sears script says a lot too - he was one of the best writers for the series and really had a great handle on the Xena/Gabrielle relationship and Gabrielle's continuing growth. His regular presence at the Xena conventions confirms how committed he was to this show. He's a great guy.
And don't feel bad for this show getting to you. It will many times and more in the future! When Xena does serious drama, it does SERIOUS drama! This is most definitely the best episode so far in Season 4.
